    Abstract: A first network access point receives a first wireless link message from a first user terminal. The first wireless link message identifies the first user terminal. The first network access point or other system entity assigns an IP address to the first user terminal for use as a temporary mobile station identifier. The first network access point or other system entity installs a route for the IP address to a controller. The first network access point forwards a wireless link message to the user terminal specifying the IP address. The first or a second network access point receives another wireless link message from the first user terminal in which the first user terminal is identified with the IP address. The first or second network access point parses the message to determine the IP address and creates at least one standard IP packet designating the IP address specified in the message. The first or second network access point forwards the message to a router which routes the packet according to the IP address.

    Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list.

    Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for achieving optimum capacity and stability in IS-95-B based medium data rate systems. Each user served by a base station is allocated a constant portion of available transmission power. A data are transmitted to each user at this allocated transmission power and a data rate is varied in accordance with the user's channel condition. This strategy removes the variation in transmission power when a user switches between a maximum and minimum rate, thus increasing stability and capacity of the system. The capacity is further increased by allocating a constant portion of a total available transmission power of a base station is allocated to a power for data transmission power for data transmission on a fundamental forward channel and a power for transmission on supplemental forward channels. Each user is allocated one fundamental channel. Rate of transmission of data to a user is varied by allocating supplemental forward channels based on the RF conditions of a communication link and the required data rate of each of the user. The allocation is controlled by a scheduling method. In another aspect of the invention the base station, transmitting on a fixed power is allowed to gradually adjust this fixed power to allow changes in a long term data throughput.
