Abstract: An apparatus operative to transmit packet data via at least one of a first set of channels in a wireless communications system, the system supporting packet data transmissions and low delay data transmissions over a plurality of transmission channels. The apparatus comprising means for transmitting packet data via a set of packet data channels; means for transmitting control information associated with the packet data via a signalling channel, wherein the signalling channel is separate from the set of packet data channels, and wherein the control information identifies a target recipient of associated packet data; means for receiving data requests from a plurality of mobile units; means for determining a transmission schedule according to the data requests; means for assigning a priority level to each of the plurality of mobile units; and means for determining a traffic schedule among the plurality of mobile units based on the assigned priority level.

Abstract: In a high data rate communication system, a method and apparatus for selectively reducing the power of signals transmitted by an access terminal. The access terminal generates an access metric based on throughput or data rate control (DRC) information. The access terminal then compares the access metric to an access metric threshold and gates or reduces its transmit power based on the results of the comparison. The access terminal uses algorithms to determine the access metric and access metric threshold that reduce transmit power during periods when the access terminal would not be selected to receive data from an access network according to an access network selection algorithm.

Abstract: A method for limiting peak transmit power in a CDMA communication system by transmitting a first communication signal having a first high transmit power region, and transmitting a second communication signal having a second high transmit power region. A first and a second communication signal are time offset to prevent the first and second high transmit power regions from occurring simultaneously. Time shifting only a portion of the first and second communication signals is also taught. The first and second communication signals can also include respective first and second low transmit power regions. The time offset can be selected to align one of the first and second high transmit power regions with one of the first and second low transmit power regions. The total transmit power signal can be determined and the time offset can be selected to minimize a peak level of the total transmit power signal. The communication signals are separated into a plurality of portions and portions of the first and second communication signals are time offset to re-order the sequence of transmission of the plurality of portions.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for control transmission energy. The present invention describes a closed loop power control system that operates in conjunction with a transmitter using orthogonal transmit diversity. In a first embodiment of the present invention, the receiver evaluates the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the two components of the signal. A weighted sum of these two components emphasizing the weaker of the two signals is generated and used in the generation of the power control commands. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the SNR of the two component signals are calculated and two separate power control commands are generated based on a corresponding one of the calculated SNR values.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing diversity transmissions to a mobile unit from a transmitting station having at least first and second antennas by repeatedly switching between the two antennas during the transmission of information to the receiving unit. Message information is transmitted from the first antenna in the transmitting station to the receiving unit. After the start of the transmission of the message information from the first antenna, transmission of the message information from the first antenna to the receiving unit terminates and transmission of the message information from the second antenna in the transmitting station to the receiving unit is initiated. Some time after transmission of the message information from second antenna is initiated, the transmission of the message information from the second antenna to the receiving unit terminates and transmission of the message information from the first antenna in the transmitting station to the receiving unit is initiated. Repeated switching between the first and second antennas is achieved by repeating the process. The switching results in diversity transmissions that improve the ability of a receiving unit to receive the coded and interleaved transmitted message information from the transmitting station. The interleaver disperses the encoded symbols in each antenna dwell period such that the decoder decisions are based on a mix of symbols form each antenna. Therefore the decoder decisions are unreliable only when the mix of symbols from the different antennas, with different fading characteristics, are unreliable over the span of symbols the decoder uses in its decision process.
