Abstract: A power control system for a cellular mobile telephone system in which system users communicate information signals between one another via at least one cell site using code division multiple access spread spectrum communication signals. The power control system controls transmission signal power for each cellular mobile telephone in the cellular mobile telephone system wherein each cellular mobile telephone has an antenna, transmitter and receiver and each cell-site also has an antenna, transmitter and receiver. Cell-site transmitted signal power is measured as received at the mobile unit. Transmitter power is adjusted at the mobile unit in an opposite manner with respect to increases and decreases in received signal power. A power control feedback scheme may also be utilized. At the cell-site communicating with the mobile unit, the mobile unit transmitted power is measured as received at the cell-site. A command signal is generated at the cell-site and transmitted to the mobile unit for further adjusting mobile unit transmitter power corresponding to deviations in the cell site received signal power. The feedback scheme is used to further adjust the mobile unit transmitter power so as to arrive at the cell-site at a desired power level.

Abstract: A cellular communication system in which a system user and another user communicate with each other by way of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted via a cell-site in which system: the system user comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said cell-site, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said cell-site and means for measuring signal quality in said information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user; the cell-site comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said system user, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said system user and adjusting means for adjusting the power of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted from the cell-site ; ; and power control means is provided for controlling the transmission power of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals by measuring the signal power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user and transmitting data representing the measured power to the cell-site by way of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals, the adjusting means being responsive to the data in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from the system user to adjust the power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted by the cell-site.

Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station (101) has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station (101) is in communication with, referred to as an "Active Set". In addition, the mobile station (101) maintains another list of base stations (300) that are proximate to the base stations (300) in the active set. This list is referred to as the "Neighbor Set". A memory within the mobile station (101) includes information that would allow the mobile station (101) to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations (300) on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station (101) places a base station (300) in the active set upon including the base station (300) in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).

Abstract: A cell site, comprising: means for modulating configured to format digital data for transmission on a communications channel and to insert at least one timing command into the digital data, the digital data comprising a plurality of bits; means for transmitting coupled to the means for modulating and configured to receive the digital data from the means for modulating, convert the digital data to analog data, and transmit the analog data on the communications channel; and means for receiving configured to receive a signal from at least one remote unit and to determine a timing error of the received signal to be used to generate the timing command in accordance with the timing error, the means for receiving being coupled to the means for modulating and configured to provide the timing command to the means for modulating.

Abstract: In one embodiment of method and appartus for determining loading in a communication system, the communication system accumulates a power control commands series and corresponding transmit gain adjustments series between a base station and a designated remote station, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remaining remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the accumulation, and determines the loading according to the accumulated series. Alternatively, the communication system measures power of a test signal injected into base station receiver, under regular operating conditions. Abstract: An improved method and system for performing a pilot signal searching operation in anticipation of handoff in mobile station communication between base stations is disclosed herein. The searching operation is described herein as being implemented within a cellular communication system which uses code division multiple access (CDMA) modulation techniques. The mobile station maintains a list of an Active Set of pilot signals transmitted from base stations with which the mobile station is to communicate through, and a Neighbor Set of pilots from base stations within a predetermined proximity of the mobile station. In addition to the Neighbor and Active Sets of pilots, the mobile station maintains a list of Candidate and Pre-Candidate Sets of pilots. Based on analysis of the signal strength of the pilot signals received at the mobile station, base station entries from the Neighbor Set may be assigned to the Pre-Candidate and Candidate Sets, and eventually to the Active set. The searching operation contemplates comparing pilot signal strength measurements corresponding to each base station entry within the Neighbor Set to a first predetermined level. One or more entries from the Neighbor Set having a base station signal strength measurement greater than the first predetermined level may be placed in the Pre-Candidate Set. The strength of the pilot signals associated with entries in the Pre-Candidate Set are then further evaluated to determine eligibility within the Candidate Set, from which are selected the entries comprising the Active Set.

Abstract: The character of the noise in a series of incoming symbols received over a wireless link is determined. A series of corresponding bits are recovered based upon the series of incoming symbols. The series of corresponding bits are encoded to determine a series of recovered symbols. A vector product of the series of incoming symbols and the series of recovered symbols is determined. A difference between two symbols within the vector product is determined, wherein the two symbols were transmitted over the wireless link in close temporal proximity to one another. The expected value of a non-orthogonal noise portion of the series of incoming symbols is determined based upon an expected value of the difference between the two symbols.

Abstract: A system and method for assembling a single data stream from multiple instances of that data stream is described. Data transmitted from a cellular telephone subscriber unit is received by a set of base transceiver stations. Each base transceiver station performs various error detection procedures on segments of the data referred to as frames. These error detection procedures may include CRC check sum verification, Yamamoto metric calculation, re-encoded signal error rate calculation, or a combination thereof. The results of these error detection procedures are placed into a frame quality metric. The frame, frame quality metric, a time stamp and an address are placed into a packet that is transmitted from each base transceiver station to a base station controller which matches packets attempting to transmit the same information using the time stamp and selects one frame from the packets for further processing based on the associated frame quality metric.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing soft handoff in a mobile communication system. In current systems is that the members of active set are determined in accordance with comparisons of measured pilot energy with fixed thresholds. However, the value of providing a redundant communication link to a mobile station depends strongly on the energy of other signals being provided to the mobile station. In the present invention, the signal strengths of other base stations in communication with a mobile station are considered when determining whether adding a base to that set of base stations in communication with the remote station is of sufficient value to justify the impact on system capacity.

En una primera modalidad alternativa, la estacion remota pondera las senales ocupadas de enlace inverso, de acuerdo con la potencia de senal de la estacion base (102, 104 o 106) que transmite la senal ocupada, y determina si se transmiten con base en la suma ponderada de las senales ocupadas.
