    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow many packet data users to share a communication channel resource in common. SOLUTION: A digital communication system is provided with one communication transceiver 202 between many digital transceivers that has a forward link and a reverse link, transmits a data packet through a random access channel 208 on the reverse link and receives a digital information from the forward link. This system is provided with a base station 108 to receive the data packet through the random access channel 208 from the reverse link and to transmit the digital information on the forward link. The digital transceiver shares the random channel 208.

In current systems, members of an active set of base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) are determined by comparing measured pilot energy with fixed thresholds. The value of providing a redundant communication link to a mobile station (2) primarily depends on the energy of other signals being provided to the mobile station (2). In the present invention, the signal strength of each signal transmitted by other base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) in communication with a mobile station (2) is considered when determining whether to add a base station to the set of base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) in communication with the remote station. A base station is added only if the signal received from that base station provides sufficient added value to justify the impact on system capacity.

    Abstract: In a digital communication system for communicating digital information (100), the digital communication system having a forward link (120) and a reverse link (130), a system and method for communicating a data packet. The system comprises a communicating transceiver (202), from among a number of digital transceivers (102), for sending the data packet on a random access channel (208) over the reverse link and for receiving the digital information from the forward link. The system also comprises a base station (108) for receiving the data packet on the random access channel (208) from the reverse link (130) and for sending the digital information over the forward link (120). The digital transceivers (102) share the random access channel (208). The digital transceivers (102) have a bandwidth demand. The system (100) may also include a dedicated channel (214) for communicating the data packet between the communicating transceiver (202) and the base station (108) and a processor (212) for switching from the random access channel (208) to the dedicated channel (214) when the bandwidth demand exceeds a first threshold, and for switching from the dedicated channel (214) to the random access channel (208) when the bandwidth demand drops below a second threshold. The system is well suited for use in CDMA applications.

    Abstract: An apparatus for providing authentication of a mobile station in a wireless communication system. The present invention takes the number dialed by the mobile station user and computes the 24 bit number (AUTH-DATA) for authentication in accordance with a hashing function that has the following characteristics. The hashing function takes as its input at least the entire dialed digit string contained in the request for service and the number of digits. In a preferred embodiment, the ordering of the digits affects the result, as well as, the values of the digits. The preferred embodiment of the hashing function also accepts some or all of the mobile station identifier data. The function provides as output a number of suitable size for input to a second calculation of an authentication signature, such as the 24 bits required for AUTH-DATA. The output number is created in such a way that there is a minimum likelihood that other sets of dialed digits may create the same result.
