Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the stability of an optical contact state by holding a light converging means at the optical contact state with the surface of an optical disk, maintaining a specified flying height with respect to the surface of an optical dish by an air lubricating surface and forming the light converging means of a Fresnel lens integrally formed on the surface of a slider consisting of a transparent material on the side opposite to its air lubricating surface. SOLUTION: The slider 22 is eventually made to float and travel at the prescribed flying height with respect to the surface of the optical disk 11 by the positive pressure generated by the air stream flowing between the air lubricating surface and the surface of the optical disk 11. As a result, a Fresnel lens 21 instructed on the slider 22 is eventually maintained at the specified spacing with the surface of the optical disk 11, i.e., in the optical contact state. Then, the Fresnel lens 21 is made to occupy always the focus position with respect to the signal recording surface of the optical disk 11 by selecting the flying height of the slider 22 so as to converge the light beam to the signal recording surface of the optical disk 11.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to reduce damage on an air lubrication surface and a leading edge of a slider, and also to reduce losses on a boundary between an optical lens and the slider. SOLUTION: This device irradiates a rotating optical disc with a beam of light via a light focusing means 21, and has an optical pickup for detecting return light from the optical disk by a photo-detector. The light focusing means 21 comprises at least an optical lens 22 maintained in an optical contact state to the surface of the optical disk. And, this optical lens 22 is supported by a slider 24 holding a fixed flying height to the optical disk surface by an air lubrication surface 24a. Further, this optical lens is bonded to the depth of cut 25 formed in the direction perpendicular to the air lubrication surface.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a lens of a low cost by providing a light converging means with a hemispherical lens for holding the surface of an optical disk in an optical contact state, maintaining its aperture ratio at a specific constant and forming planes proximate to the optical disk surface of the hemispherical lens, then forming a spherical portion. SOLUTION: The condenser lens 25 as the light converging means is composed, successively from a light source side, of an objective lens 41 and a front lens 3. The front lens 43 is constituted by first forming a first plane 43a and a second plane 43b, then forming the spherical portion and, therefore, the portions annihilated by polishing in a polishing stage for forming the spherical portion are decreased. Then, the polishing stage ends in a short period of time and the material cost is eventually reduced. If the form of the raw material is a wafer the easy manufacture of the large-sized lens is made possible. Further, the second plane 43b is easily formed with respect to the first plane 43a and, therefore, the accuracy of the first plane 43a and the second plane 43b is easily improved.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a Fresnel lens having a large numerical aperture(NA), to efficiently condense incident light to a small spot diameter and to enhance resolution by forming a diffraction grating on the surface of a substrate comprising a material having a specified refractive index. SOLUTION: A diffraction grating 17 is formed on one of parallel principal surfaces of a flat substrate 11 comprising an optical material having a refractive index (n) of >=1.5 to obtain the objective optical element 10. The optical material is, e.g. a material based on GaP(gallium phosphorus, n=3.3), GaN(gallium nitrogen, n=3) or SrTiO3(strontium titanium oxide, n=2.8). The substrate 11 preferably comprises GaP, GaN or SrTiO3, in particular GaP. Parallel light beams Le incident on the optical element 10 are efficiently diffracted by the diffraction grating 17 and emitted as parallel light beams Ld.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease insertion loss and crosstalk, to reduce size and to improve switching rate by forming electrodes separated in the propagation direction of light beams on the principal face of a dielectric substrate where a periodical structure of polarization inversion domains is formed. SOLUTION: In this optical switch 10, the dielectric substrate 11 consists of a lithium niobate crystal and a periodical structure of polarization inversion domains is formed thereon as same as the dielectric substrate. On one principal face as the back of the figure, an electrode is formed all over the face, while rectangular electrodes 3a to 3f are successively formed in the longitudinal direction on the other principal plane. In this optical switch 10, specified voltage is selectively applied on the electrode 3a to 3f so that the outgoing direction of a laser beam L is switched each by a same angle by the electrode 3a to 3f with applied voltage. Thus, the laser beam can be guided to enter only one of optical fibers 11A to 11F with an enough suppressing ratio by applying specified voltage.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distance detecting device and a distance detecting method which detect the distance between an objective lens and an optical disk in an optical contact state and an optical disk drive which uses them. SOLUTION: In an optical lens 13a and an optical disk which are in an optical contact and composed of a >=1 NA(numerical aperture), this distance detecting device 21 is equipped with a light source 22 which irradiates an optical disk 11 through an optical lens 13a with a light beam consisting of a main beam L1 and at least one side beam L2 and L3, an optical detecting means 23 which detects the return lights of the main beam and side beam from the optical disk and an arithmetic means 24 which detects the distance between the optical lens and the optical disk based on the difference between the detected signals of the return lights from the optical detecting means, so that the respective optical paths of the main beam and the side beam have mutually different distances between the optical lens and optical disk.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately evaluate performance of a large numerical aperture(NA) lens by providing a reference wavefront generation means which generates a reference wavefront to interfere with a wavefront to be detected which runs an incident optical path in an opposite direction after being reflected at a reflecting means and passes again a lens to be detected. SOLUTION: A laser beam 11 is reflected at a polarizing reflecting face 13a of a polarization beam splitter(PBS) 13, runs along an optical axis 12 in a forward direction and penetrates a 1/4 wave plate 15 to be a circularly polarized light. The light passing the 1/4 wave plate 15 is reflected at a face 16a to be a reference wave R1 . The wave further penetrates a plane plate 16 and becomes a parallel light T1 . The parallel light T1 is refracted at a plane 19b to be a spherical wave-like wavefront and reaches a convex face 19a. The wavefront in a range S provided for reflection is directly reflected and consequently returns an original optical path to be a parallel plane wave again, which penetrates the plane plate 16, etc., and reaches a screen 21. A light and shade pattern because of an interference of the reference wave R1 and a wave R2 to be detected is projected onto the screen 21, and imaged by a CCD 22.
