Abstract:
The subject invention provides water-swellable polymer compositions having reduced dusting tendencies, i.e., reduced amounts of unassociated dust having a maximum diameter less than or equal to 10 microns and/or the tendency to generate reduced amounts of unassociated dust having a maximum diameter less than or equal to 10 microns upon attrition; a process for preparing such compositions; and a process useful for ascertaining the amount of unassociated matter having a diameter less than a predetermined size, such as unassociated dust having a maximum diameter less than or equal to 10 microns, present in such compositions.
Abstract:
Sintered aluminum nitride bodies having a TC of at least 200 W/m.K are prepared by sintering under non-reducing conditions and controlling interrelated parameters such as binder burnout atmosphere, heating rate, sintering temperature, time at sintering temperature, cooling rate and cooling temperature. The sintered bodies may also have a TC in excess of 270 W/m.K.
Abstract:
A powdered admixture of a boron, carbon, nitrogen or silicon derivative of a first metal is combined with at least one other reactant that is selected from (a) a boron, carbon, nitrogen or silicon derivative of a second metal wherein the derivative differs from that of the first metal, (b) a source of a second metal and a source of a third metal, or (c) a source of the second metal and a densification promoting amount of an iron group metal, subjected to densification conditions (heat and pressure), partially reacted and converted to a hard, wear resistant material. The wear resistant material contains an amount of the first metal derivative as well as at least one material of varying stoichiometry that is the partial reaction product. The material may also contains residual, unreacted portions of components other than the first metal derivative. Articles formed from this material can be useful in wear resistant applications.
Abstract:
A method for adjusting an adaptive exponential filter (3), especially for noise reduction. The input of the filter is supplied with a series of time-discrete input signals (Xk) containing both data and noise. An estimate of the standard deviation ( sigma ) of the filter input signal (Xk) has been determined prior to the execution of the adaptive exponential filter method. The method comprises the steps of: measuring the deviation (dk) between the current filter input signal (Xk) to the filter and the prior sample period's output signal (Yk-1) from the filter; determining the proportion (Rk) of the deviation to the estimate of the standard deviation; and, adjusting the discrete time constant (Fk) of the filter in response to the proportion to provide a filter output signal (Yk) at the output of the filter.
Abstract:
An aluminum nitride powder that has substantially no ammonia odor after exposure to atmospheric moisture is obtained placing the powder in operative contact, such as by admixing, with a gettering compound that sublimes or decomposes at a temperature below 500 DEG C. Admixing is one method of obtaining operative contact. The gettering compound is a C1-C11 aliphatic carboxylic mono- or polyfunctional acid, an anhydride or an ester of such an acid or an anhydride of an aromatic carboxylic acid.
Abstract:
A process for preparing polycarbonate wherein a chain terminator is added to the reaction mixture after substantial reaction of a carbonate precursor, a coupling catalyst is added to the reaction mixture after substantial reaction of the chain terminator, and base is added to the reaction mixture after reaction mixture after substantial reaction of the chain terminator in an amount sufficient to give a negative chloroformate test.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for preparing a microporous membrane from an unsulfonated poly(phenylene sulfide) polymer by forming a mixture of an unsulfonated poly(phenylene sulfide) polymer, an amorphous polymer, and optionally a plasticizer, heating the resulting mixture, extruding or optionally casting the mixture into a membrane, controlled cooling (quenching) or coagulating the membrane, and leaching the membrane, while optionally drawing the membrane before, during, and/or after leaching.
Abstract:
Processes for polymerizing ethylene/a-olefin interpolymer compositions are disclosed. The interpolymer compositions have a controlled composition and a controlled molecular weight distribution. The processes utilize a highly-efficient homogeneous catalyst composition in at least one reactor to produce a first interpolymer having a narrow composition distribution and a narrow molecular weight distribution, and a highly-efficient heterogeneous Ziegler catalyst in at least one other reactor. The reactors can be operated sequentially or separately, depending upon the desired product. The novel compositions have good optical properties (e.g., clarity and haze) and good physical properties (e.g., modulus, yield strength, toughness and tear). Useful products which can be formed from these compositions include film, molded articles and fiber.
Abstract:
Articles (other than fiber) made from polybenzazole dopes are quickly washed to remove polyphosphoric acid by a combination of initially washing with an acidic liquid and second washing with a hot leaching fluid at least 60 DEG C. The process can reach acceptable residual phosphorous levels (1500 to 2000 ppm) in as little as 2 or 3 minutes.

A gasket assembly with double spiral-wound gaskets and a middle draw-off port for leak detection in service with a process fluid featuring: 1) an inner primary seal spiral-wound gasket (14) with a high spring rate to hold the process fluid and pressure, 2) an outer secondary seal spiral-wound gasket (22) with a lower spring-rate to hold the process fluid temporarily while a new gasket is being installed, 3) inner and outer compression/gauge rings (12, 24) that allow compression of the spiral-wound gaskets to the proper thickness, and 4) a middle compression ring (16) between the two spiral-wound gaskets that also provides a groove (20) on each side in communication with a draw-off port (18) for monitoring leakage from the inner gasket.
