The invention relates to a method for producing tailored blanks by hot-rolling a strip, and to a device for carrying out the method. The tailored blanks to be cut to length from the rolled strip are obtained by cooling or heating the hot strip in sections, so that it experiences a different reduction in thickness in the individual sections whilst the roll force remains essentially constant, the sections having been given a different yield stress value due to the different temperature settings.

The invention relates to a process for producing cold-rollable steel strip consisting of the sequential steps: a) a thin slab 30 to 100 mm thick (solidification thickness) is produced from a steel melt by continuous casting; b) the thin slab produced by step a) is descaled; c) the descaled thin slab is hot-rolled at temperatures in the region of 1150 to 900 DEG C to reduce its thickness by at least 50 % to provide an intermediate strip with a maximum thickness of 20 mm; d) the semi-finished strip is cooled quickly after hot-rolling; e) the cooled semi-finished strip is isothermally rolled at 850 to 600 DEG C on a finishing train with at least three stands into strips with a maximum thickness of 2 mm; f) the isothermally rolled steel strip is then fast-cooled to a temperature of 100 DEG C at the most and preferably coiled up as the finished strip. The invention also relates to a device for implementing the process.

A continuous process and system for making flat rolled steel or ferrous metal strip having a minimum thickness sufficient to allow substantially direct product manufacture therefrom, wherein a Platzer planetary mill (22) continuously receives an as-continuously cast endless slab of steel (19) or ferrous metal and effects a first reduction in thickness from the as-continuously cast thickness of the slab, a plurality of millstands (70, 72, 74, 76) sequentially receive the continuous strip (19) from the Platzer planetary mill (22) to effect a second reduction in thickness of at least about 50 % of the first reduced thickness to provide a continuous strip having an average thickness of less than about 1.8 mm, and electric induction reheaters (78, 80, 82) are placed between each adjacent pair of millstands (70, 72, 74, 76) to maintain the continuous strip (19) at a working temperature sufficient to effect the second reduction in thickness.
