    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve mechanism wherein a power-transmission path from a driving cam to a valve member is simply made up of a small number of parts, and these parts are placed beside a camshaft to suppress the height of the mechanism. SOLUTION: The variable valve mechanism 1 for a gasoline engine includes the camshaft 2 provided with the driving cam 5, a driven member 10 rectilinearly moved by the driving cam 5, a cam member 11 movable parallel with the movement of the driven member 10, a valve-lifter 7 opening/closing a valve 4 in response to cam-profiles 17a, 17b of the cam member 11, and an actuator 24 adjusting relative positions between the driven member 10 and the cam member 11. The driven member 10 is provided to the height nearly equal to that of the camshaft 2 with respect to a cylinder head 3, and the valve-lifter 7 is placed below the driven member 10.
