Abstract: Gas discharge display apparatus of the self-shift type for displaying characters. The panel has a plurality of vertical parallel shift channels along which discharge spots can be shifted. Characters made up of discharge spots are displayed in "horizontal" lines. … Apparatus which reduces operator fatique employs a self-shift PDP (20) with write and shift circuitry (14 to 22) such that discharge spots for making up characters are initiated at adjacent ends of shift channels which run "vertically". The discharge spots are shifted vertically so as to form the characters "horizontally" in a line in a monitor area (11) of the self-shift PDP (10) next to those ends of the shift channels. The characters are formed in their final "horizontal" positions in the monitor area (11), with a saving of time, and characters can be readily altered. The characters are then shifted jointly, from monitor area (11), into a display area (12). In a further embodiment the apparatus also comprises a cursor display area (31) and a second write row area (34).

Abstract: 1479612 Gas discharge display panels FUJITSU Ltd 23 Sept 1974 [21 Sept 1973] 41409/74 Heading HID [Also in Division G5] In gas discharge apparatus of the kind having first and second arrays of electrodes x and y disposed adjacent to a gas discharge space so that respective discharge cells are provided at locations where electrodes of the first array cross those of the second array, respective first eletrodes xa1, xa2 .. of a set of successive groups of the electrodes of the first array are connected together electrically in common at one end, and respective second electrodes xb1, xb2 ... of the said successive groups are connected individually to separately controllable outlets of a supply circuit 110. In the arrangement shown the y electrodes of the second array are similarly connected. A discharge initiated and sustained at cell S by applying addressing and sustaining voltages to electrodes xb2 and yb2 primes the surrounding cells A, B, C and D and beyond to different extents so a sustain voltage can be applied to these cells such that only cell A which is nearest to cell S is fired. Decoding is thus effected by plasma coupling within the panel, so the external circuitry is simplified, addressing of sustain voltage being unnecessary. Alternative embodiments are described in which additional common connections are provided to further reduce the external circuitry, and X and Y drivers are provided.

Abstract: A gas discharge panel includes several pairs of column (X) electrodes arranged on a first substrate and several pairs of row (Y) electrodes arranged on a second substrate, the column and row electrodes being orthogonally oriented and in spaced, opposed relation to define therebetween a gap filled with an ionizable gas. In a first driving configuration, a corresponding electrode of each pair of (X) electrodes is selectively driven by an (X) address driver and similarly a corresponding one of each of the (Y) electrode pairs is selectively driven by a (Y) address driver. The other electrode of each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs then is connected in common to respective (X) and (Y) sustain voltage driver terminals. In a further embodiment, each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs is arranged in corresponding groups of electrode pairs, each group including a common number of such pairs. First electrodes of each pair of each group are connected to a common output terminal of an address and sustain voltage driver; thus, plural address and sustain voltage driver outputs corresponding to the plural groups are employed for each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs. The second electrodes of corresponding pairs of the plural groups are connected to respectively corresponding, further common output terminals of address and sustain voltage drivers; thus, a plurality of further common terminals corresponding to the number of electrode pairs in each group are provided, as to each of the (X) and (Y) electrodes. The panel as thus configured affords decoding of addressing signals applied to the common terminals by means of plasma coupling within the panel whereby the discharge point or cell defined by a desired electrode of each of the column and the row electrode pairs can be addressed selectively. A further embodiment provides shifting of the display to successive positions in either the (X) or (Y) directions.

Abstract: A self-shift plasma display panel based on the surface discharge is disclosed. This plasma display panel has two electrode groups of shift electrodes and channel electrodes which are positioned so that the two types of electrodes cross at right angles on the same substrate facing a discharge space filled with gas capable of ionization. The shift electrodes are alternately connected to first and second buss at intervals of one electrode, and the channel electrodes are alternately connected to third and fourth buss at intervals of one electrode. The above-mentioned four buss are connected to a four phase alternating voltage source. A discharge spot produced between a shift electrode and a channel electrode is shifted along the channel electrode by means of the four phase alternating voltage applied to the four buss in order.

Abstract: A self-shift plasma display panel based on the surface discharge is disclosed. Abstract: An addressable gaseous discharge device utilized for information display comprises a pair of spaced parallel oppositely positioned insulating walls forming between them a gas cell filled with ionizable gas. At least one of the insulating walls is transparent. The perimeters of the insulating walls are hermetically sealed. Field electrodes mounted on the insulating walls apply a microwave electric field to the gas cell and field electrodes mounted on the insulating walls partly and selectively apply a magnetic field in a direction crossing the microwave electric field. A glow discharge occurs in a selected part of the gas cell when the two applied fields meet the condition of cyclotron resonance of an electron.
