    Abstract: The CD (cross-machine direction) profile of a web of material being produced is monitored and controlled to update CD control settings on-line (i.e. while the processing is operating). Thus, changes in the operation of a machine manufacturing the web can be corrected before significant profile deviations from a desired CD profile target result. Detected variances in the CD profile that satisfy a search criteria initiate searches for improved CD control settings. A CD control performance indicator representative of effectiveness of a CD control is established, and CD mapping settings related to the CD control performance indicator are selected. Improved CD mapping settings are selected online, during sheet manufacture, which produce an improvement in said CD control performance. The CD control recognizes CD actuator mapping misalignments, determines improved CD control settings and applies the improved CD control settings to improve upon or correct mapping misalignments.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing transformer windings embedded in casting resin is disclosed which utilizes an integrated winding mandrel for producing a non-standard oval shaped epoxy encapsulated low voltage coil for dry type distribution transformers. The method includes a process of winding a low voltage coil of alternate layers of copper conductor (24) and insulating tape (26), over a disposable mold formed by wrapping steel sheet material over inner mold support plates (14), the formed mold acting as both a winding mandrel and as an inner mold (20) for epoxy encapsulation. Both the inner and outer molds are made of low cost sheet metal utilizing a "wrap and band" process. The complete winding and molding processes can all be conducted utilizing a conventional square mandrel shaft (12) on a standard coil winding machine (10).

    Abstract: There is described a method and apparatus for controlling the combustion by-product formation rate in at least one burner of a fossil fuel fired power plant. The burner has an associated flame scanner which is focused on a small area of the burner flame to obtain an image signal of the flame. A flame signal that represents properties of temporal combustion in the visible light spectrum of the burner is generated from the image signal. Combustion turbulence at the burner is analyzed from the flame signal by a dynamic invariant that has a relationship to the combustion by-product values and different combustion by-product levels at the burner and the combustion turbulence is correlated to the combustion by-product formation rate at the burner. The method and apparatus can also be used to correlated the combustion turbulence at a multiplicity of burners to the associated combustion by-product formation rate.

    Abstract: A method of robotic assembly, for manufacturing plastic components from parts mounted upon a plastic shell, using an integrated system of material handling and robots following a programmed series of operations. The robot cells carry out the following steps: (a) scanning the pallet and identifying that the pallet is locked in the docked position of the cell; (b) scanning an assembly area of the shell and communicating location and planarity data to the robot of the cell; (c) selecting a plastic part from a part supply device with the robot; (d) welding the part to the assembly surface of the plastic shell using the robot to perform a spin or fusion welding process. The spin welding process includes: engaging a mounting surface of the part with the assembly surface of the shell; rotating the part until the mounting and assembly surfaces are heated; and applying pressure to the part sufficient to fuse the mounting and assembly surfaces together. The fusion welding includes: simultaneously heating the mounting and assembly surfaces with heaters; and applying pressure to the part sufficient to fuse the mounting and assembly surfaces together; (e) determining the performance status of the foregoing cell steps and identifying the status as: good; scrap or rework. Good status results in conveyance of the loaded pallet for processing at any succeeding cell, but rework and scrap status result in conveyance of the loaded pallet to the unload station without processing at any succeeding cell.
