Abstract:
A system and method for remotely configuring storage space in multiple storage devices. The multiple storage devices include free storage space and storage space allocated to a user for storing data from the user, where the user is located at a site remote from the storage devices. A portion of the free storage space is automatically transferred to the allocated storage space in response to a request by the remote user to increase the size of the allocated storage space.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed toward a data management appliance and ancillary technologies for replicating data written to a primary storage system. The data management appliance is a random-access storage system that at the logical block level replicates the contents of a primary storage system over time.

Abstract:
A data processing system, computer program product, and data processing system for providing an adjustable level of synchronicity between duplicated transactions is disclosed. An acceptable level of lag between transactions is specified. Duplicated transactions performed at redundant systems are allowed to lag behind the corresponding transactions at the primary system by the specified amount of lag. Lag may be measured in terms of number of transactions, an amount of data, amount of time, or using any other suitable metric.
Abstract:
The present invention provides two methods, apparatus, and computer instructions for controlling tape movement in a tape drive system. In the first method, the direction of tape movement is determined with respect to a file reel and a machine reel. If the direction of tape movement is toward the file reel, the tape is moved using machine reel control, and if the direction of tape movement is toward the machine reel, the tape is moved using file reel control. In the second method, the size of a file reel, designated as the file radius, and the size of a machine reel, designated as the machine radius, are determined. If the machine radius is smaller than the file radius, tape motion is carried out using machine reel control, and if the file radius is equal to or smaller than the machine radius, tape motion is carried out using file reel control.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for reducing the sensitivity of spin valve sensor read heads for magnetic tape applications are provided. The apparatus and methods compromise the large output gain derived from using state of the art spin valve sensors in order to reduce the flux capture and thus, the signal distortion in the spin valve sensor. In order to provide a reduced sensitivity spin valve sensor, one or more of the basic sensitivity of the spin valve, the flux carrying capability of the free layer, and the flux injection efficiency of the spin valve head structure are modified to reduce the flux capture by the sensing layer.

Abstract:
A customer making a credit card transaction inserts their smart card into a card reader attached to the merchant's system. The card reader activates the customer's card and passes certain merchant information. The merchant's system then requests a "billing digest" from the customer's card. The billing digest is returned to the merchant's card reader that forwards it (and the transaction information which includes customer information and merchant information) to the corresponding credit card issuer, which maintains the customer's credit card account. In one embodiment, the customer information and the merchant information are encrypted. Upon receiving the billing digest, transaction information is decrypted if necessary and the credit card issuer looks up the customer's master key using the customer's account number. The credit card issuer then uses the transaction information to re-compute the billing digest (an authentication billing digest) and compares this new value with the billing digest submitted by the merchant. If authentic, the billing digest and authentication billing digest values are equivalent, then funds are transferred and an acceptance notification is returned to the merchant. If not authentic, a denial notification is returned to the merchant. Security is further enhanced by utilizing a unique reference for each transaction in the unique customer information used for creating the billing digest.
Abstract:
A system is provided to support dynamically changeable virtual mapping schemes in a data processing system. The present invention separates processing of data unit requirements from the selection of which storage subsystems to use for storage by using a storage methodologies inventory. A stored data management subsystem contains one or more hosts. A plurality of data storage elements is functionally coupled to the one or more hosts. The plurality of data storage elements is organized using a plurality of layers of mapping tables. The plurality of layers of mapping tables provides unique identification of location of the data such that individual data entries in a mapping table is variable and self-defining with respect to the amount of data managed. In addition, the present system provides various instant copy mechanisms for copying data upon receiving a write operation to either a source or copy data. The instant copy mechanisms may be selected based on the type of mapping originally used to store the data that is to be copied.
Abstract:
A method and system for accessing media objects in an automated storage library using (10) a robotic mechanism (12) included mounting the robotic mechanism to a horizontally arranged track (21, 22) arranged in the same plane as first and second horizontal rows of media object storage cells. Each of the media object storage cells houses a media object. The horizontally arranged track is disposed adjacent to the first row of media object storage cells. The robotic mechanism is mounted to the track for moving horizontally along the track. A media object manipulation mechanism such as a gripper mechanism is coupled to the robotic mechanism. The media object manipulation mechanism is vertically movable for moving between the first and second rows of media object storage cells when the robotic mechanism is coupled to the track to manipulate the media objects housed within the first and second rows of media object storage cells.
