Abstract: A failure independent, fault tolerant Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) storage subsystem comprising a Disk Control Unit and a number of Physical Devices is provided with a parity Generator for generating a parity for system records as the system records are transferred between the storage subsystem and a CPU of a data processing system. The parity is stored on a different unit so that if one unit containing portions of a system record becomes unavailable, the unavailable portion of the record is reconstructed during transfer to the CPU from the remainder of the record and the parity. The storage system of the invention can accommodate variable length data records without requiring operating system modifications.

Abstract: The occurrence of a failure within the customer system is identified using these rules, hypotheses, collected real time data as well as historical performance and diagnostic data to isolate the source of the error in the customer system and, whenever possible, "fence" or isolate the failed field replaceable unit that has caused the error. This failure identification process is enhanced by the provision of memory on each field replaceable unit within the customer system. The memory is used to provide history data on a filed replaceable unit basis. In particular, data is written into the field replaceable unit to identify the content and repair status of the field replaceable unit. Data is also provided to indicate failed operational elements contained on the field replaceable unit as well as prior maintenance activity in which the field replaceable unit was identified as a suspected failed unit. The memory can contain varying quantities of data indicative of the performance and life history of the field replaceable unit as well as the various environments in which it was operational, including identified failures.

Abstract: This system makes use of a tape cassette helical scan tape transport and a modified 3480-type magnetic tape cartridge as the data storage media. The merging of these two incompatible elements is accomplished by the use of a novel interface that implements a "virtual tape cassette" by providing a takeup reel positioned with the magnetic tape cartridge in a relationship that substantially matches the format of a magnetic tape cassette. A short tape threading arm is used to retrieve the leader block from the tape cartridge and thread the magnetic tape over a short tape threading path to the takeup reel. Once the tape is affixed to the takeup reel, the helical scan tape loading mechanism transports the length of tape that is now exposed between the tape cartridge and the takeup reel to the rotary heads. The helical scan magnetic tape cartridge has the same exterior dimensions as a conventional 3480-type magnetic tape cartridge but is implemented in the inverse configuration. In particular, the magnetic tape is wound counterclockwise around the cartridge spindle, with the recording surface of the magnetic tape facing out and the magnetic tape exiting the left corner of the cartridge (when viewed from the top). In addition, the right front corner of the cartridge may be angled to further distinguish the helical scan magnetic tape cartridge from the conventional 3480-type magnetic tape cartridge.

Abstract: A digital data decoder is provided that combines Viterbi algorithms and a run-length code constraint. The combined Viterbi detection and code constraint does not limit the bits that can be analyzed in determining the binary state of the bit currently being detected. The logic associated with the code constraint is not enabled unless actual data is being decoded.

Abstract: This apparatus makes use of a disk drive array to store data records for an associated host processor. This disk drive array emulates the operation of a large form factor disk drive by using a plurality of interconnected small form factor disk drives. These small form factor disk drives are configured into redundancy groups, each of which contains n+m disk drives for storing data records and redundancy information thereon. The use of this configuration is significantly more reliable than a large form factor disk drive. However, in order to maintain compatibility with host processors that request the duplex copy group feature, the phantom duplex copy group apparatus of the present invention mimics the creation of a duplex copy group in this dynamically mapped data storage subsystem using a disk array and a phantom set of pointers that mimic the data storage devices on which the data records are stored.

Abstract: The improved data compression system concurrently processes both strings of repeated characters and textual substitution of input character strings. In this system, the performance of data compression techniques based on textual substitution are improved by the use of a compact representation for identifying instances in which a character in the input data stream is repeated. This is accomplished by nesting a run length encoding system in the textual substitution system. This structure adds the recognition of runs of a repeated character before the processor performs the textual substituted data compression operation. A further performance improvement is obtained by expanding the alphabet of symbols stored in the compressor's dictionary to include both the characters of the input data stream and repeat counts which indicate the repetition of a character. The handling of these repeat counts by the textual substitution based compression technique is no different than the handling of characters, or certain modifications are made in the handling of repeat counts.

Abstract: The multiple step data read apparatus provides a buffer memory (108-0) for each read/write head (110-0) in the rotating media (111-0) data storage system that can store up to the entire track (400) of data that includes the requested data (Sectors 2-6). The data is fragmented such that the data transferred into the read/write head buffer first is transmitted to the control unit first whether or not that data is at the beginning of the data requested by the control unit. The data is further fragmented such that critical portions of the data are available to the control unit to satisfy the host request as soon as the data is read from the device. This fragmenting results in the data becoming available to the control unit in the minimum time possible and the performance of the subsystem being the maximum possible. In addition each data fragment transfer to the control unit (104) is initiated a predetermined time before the end of the fragment of data such that the read/write head (110-0) reaches the end of the fragment the same time that the last sector of the fragment is transmitted to the control unit (104).

Abstract: A storage and retrieveal subsystem in a data processing system includes a plurality of magnetic tape cartridges, a host computer (102), and a library storage module (108) storing the plurality of magnetic tape cartridges in substantially upright positions. The library storage module (108) includes a first cylindrical array (130) of storage cells (132) centered about a vertical axis (A), a second cylindrical array (134) of storage cells (132) concentrially arranged about the first array (130), and a library tape unit (152) including a plurality of tape drives (150), each of the tape drives (150) being adapted to receive one of the magnetic tape cartridges in a substantially horizontal transducing position. A robot (140) within the library storage module (108) is used to transfer selected ones of the magnetic tape cartridges between their substantially upright positions and the substantially horizontal transducing positions at a selected tape drive (150). A first controller (106) outboard the channel communicating with the host computer (102) is adapted to receive commands from the host computer (102) for interfacing between the host computer (102) and the library storage module (108), and a second controller (LCU) inboard of the channel is adapted to receive commands from the outboard controller (106) for interfacing between the outboard controller (106) and the robot (140).
