Abstract: An electronic device comprising: one or more input structures; a storage structure capable of storing one or more executable routines; a processor capable of receiving inputs from the one or more input structures and of executing the one or more executable routines; and a liquid crystal display (LCD) capable of displaying an output of the processor, wherein the LCD includes: a liquid crystal display panel; and an edge-lit backlight unit 104 configured to output light to the liquid crystal display panel, the backlight unit including: a light guiding plate106; a light source 108 adjacent a lateral edge of the light guiding plate; and a turning film 120 disposed over the light guiding plate, the turning film including a plurality of prisms 118 on a surface of the turning film facing the light guiding plate, wherein the plurality of prisms includes prisms having apex angles between approximately fifty and sixty-five degrees; wherein the light guiding plate is configured to receive light from the light source at the lateral edge such that the received light propagates through the light guiding plate and is redirected by lenses of the light guiding plate to emit light to the turning film, and wherein light emitted from an emission surface of the light guiding plate is distributed within a primary distribution range of thirty-five degrees to eighty-five degrees measured with respect to a normal of an emission surface of the light guide and at a peak incident angle between fifty-seven degrees and sixty-three degrees with respect to the normal from the light guide.

Abstract: A touch screen including display pixels with capacitive elements is provided. The touch screen includes first common voltage lines connecting capacitive elements in adjacent display pixels, and a second common voltage line connecting first common voltage lines. The pixels can be formed as electrically separated regions by including breaks in the common voltage lines. The regions can include a drive region that is stimulated by stimulation signals, a sense region that receives sense signals corresponding to the stimulation signals. A grounded region can also be included, for example, between a sense region and a drive region. A shield layer can be formed of a substantially high resistance material and disposed to shield a sense region. A black mask line and conductive line under the black mask line can be included, for example, to provide low-resistance paths between a region of pixels and touch circuitry outside the touch screen borders.

Abstract: An integrated liquid-crystal display (LCD) touch screen 100 is provided in which touch-sensing elements can be completely implemented within the LCD stack. The LCD stack comprises a first and a second polarizer; a first and a second substrate disposed between the polarizers, display control circuitry formed on the first substrate, a liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates and at least one touch sensing element. At least one of the touch-sensing elements is disposed between the polarizers but not between the substrates. In some embodiments all of the touch sensing elements can be disposed outside the substrates. The touch sensing elements may be formed on the second substrate. The touch sensor may comprise a first layer with a plurality of drive electrodes 105a and a second layer with a plurality of sense electrodes 105b, preferably formed of indium-tin oxide (ITO) and separated by a dielectric layer. Alternative the touch-sensing elements may comprise active circuitry, such as thin film transistors (TFTs). The touch sensing element may employ a mutual capacitance or self capacitance touch-sensing arrangement. Alternative examples are also provided in which all touch sensing elements are disposed between the substrates. In some of these examples, one or more display control circuit elements can also have a touch sensing function. The substrates typically comprise a color filter plate and an array plate. Techniques for manufacturing and operating such displays, as well as various devices embodying such displays are also disclosed.

Abstract: A touch sensor panel having co-planar single-layer touch sensors fabricated on a single side of a substrate is disclosed. The drive and sense lines can be fabricated as column-like patterns in a first orientation and patches in a second orientation, where each column-like pattern in the first orientation is connected to a separate metal trace in the border area of the touch sensor panel, and all patches in each of multiple rows in the second orientation are connected together using a separate metal trace in the border area of the touch sensor panel. The metal traces in the border areas can be formed on the same side of the substrate as the patches and columns, but separated from the patches and column-like patterns by a dielectric layer.
