Abstract: A wireless communication device and a method for transmitting and receiving at least one frame between a terminal device, connected to the wireless communication device, and an interworking function. Selected ones of a plurality of corresponding configuration options of a first and a second instance of a communication protocol, executing on the wireless communication device, are checked to determine whether they are equal. If the selected ones of the corresponding configuration options are equal, all but certain ones of a plurality of packets may be passed through the wireless communication device without unframing and reframing the communication protocol frames encapsulating the packets.

Abstract: A method, within a wireless communication system, and a wireless MT2 device which provide for the resynchronization of a PPP link on each one of a Um and Rm interface without affecting the other of the Um and Rm interface. When a handoff is performed, such that the communications of the mobile MT2 device is handed off to a new BS/MSC, the Um interface will undergo PPP configuration renegotiation without causing the Rm interface also to undergo PPP configuration renegotiation. Similarly, when the Rm interface undergoes PPP configuration renegotiation, the Um interface will not undergo PPP configuration renegotiation.

Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device (104) capable of flow controlli ng data to be sent from a TE2 device (102) over a Rm interface when PPP renegotiation occurs over a Um interface. Flow control (S320) is asserted by the MT2 device (104) by means of manipulating electrical signaling of a physical interface between the MT2 device (104) and the TE2 device (102). A second embodiment provides a method and a wireless communication device (104 ) for buffering (S420) data on the MT2 device when the PPP renegotiation of th e Um interface occurs. In a third embodiment, data is buffered when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. When an amount of free buffer spac e is less than a predetermined threshold (S540), flow control is asserted (S55 0) to the TE2 device.

Abstract: A system and method for performing mobile node registration. The system comprises a terminal device (102) for transmitting packetized data, and a wireless communication device (104) coupled to said terminal device for monitoring said packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. The wireless communication device (104) initiates mobile node registration (512) using said IP address if said IP address request is for a static IP address. The wireless communication devic e prevents (417) the terminal device from sending or receiving packetized data when initiating mobile node registration, and allows said terminal device to send and received packetized data upon completion of mobile node registratio n. As a result, the mobile node registration occurs transparently to the termin al device, obviating the need for the terminal device to have its own Mobile IP support.

Abstract: A networked device shares a single IP address with a separate networked device. The networked device examines a port number of a received IP packet. The networked device routes the IP packet to an application on the networked device if the port number of the received IP packet corresponds to the application. Otherwise, the IP packet is routed to the separate networked device. The networked device also originates IP packets including as an origination address an IP address assigned to the separate networked device. Alternately, the IP address may be 'shifted' to between the networked device and a separate networked device by blocking transmitted IP packets originating in the separate networked device, and originating IP packets, which include as an origination address an IP address assigned to the separate networked device.

Abstract: In a wireless communication system, a method for early determination of network support for Mobile IP is disclosed. A mobile node is in communication with a wireless network. Then a test is performed for a disconnect condition wherein the disconnect condition is an early indication of network non-support for Mobile IP as identified by at least a requirement for authentication. Early indication relates to identification of the non-support for Mobile IP prior to or during network packet connection. If the disconnect condition is found, the mobile node disconnects from the wireless network. If the disconnect condition is not found, the mobile node stays connected to the wireless network.

Abstract: Techniques for performing system selection based on a usage model that uses "access strings", "profiles", and "activation strings" are described. Access strings are defined for wireless data services and provide a highly intuitive user interface. Each access string is associated with one or more profiles. Each profile includes various parameters needed to establish a specific data call. Each profile is further associated with an activation string that contains connection information for the data call. System selection is performed in two parts. In the first part, a wireless user views access strings for available data services, selects the access string for the desired data service, and returns the selected access string. In the second part, the wireless device selects a profile for a system most suited to provide the desired data service, from among all profiles associated with the selected access string.

Abstract: In a communication system in which a roaming node seeking network access among different networks which are implemented with different network interface layer protocols, handoff schemes are instituted whereby the node may freely move from one network to another with reduced levels of interruptions with respect to the network access. Prior to and at the onset of a handoff, the node receives an indication for the handoff. The indication may be embodied in various forms such as a signal message indicating a change of the SID (System Identification), NID (Network Identification), or PZID (Packet Zone Identification). Alternatively, the indication can be in the form of information straightforwardly included in a data packet sent to the roaming node prior to the handoff. As another alternative, the indication can be implemented as distinguishable message patterns sent to the node in which different message patterns can be sent by different networks supporting different network interface layer protocols.

Abstract: A communication session between a node seeking network access and a NAS (Network Access Server) is established by having only few exchanges of messages. Upon detecting a physical link between the node and the NAS, the NAS immediately sends an authentication request message to the node. In response, the node sends a request message which includes all parameters options, in addition to responding to the authentication request message, for link configuration and network access control. The NAS then picks and chooses the parameter options and sends back the selected options in a reply message to the node. If the selected options in the reply message meet a threshold, the node straightforwardly transmits user data for network access via the NAS.
