Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the high-performance org. nonlinear optical material which as large optical nonlinearity, the visible absorption on a short wavelength side and high crystallinity and allows the wavelength conversion of a semiconductor laser with a transmission type by using the crystal of 3, 4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde for the org. nonlinear optical material to be used for optical information processing and optical communication, etc. CONSTITUTION:After 3, 4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHA) is sublimated and crystallized, the DHA is recrystallized with benzene/ethanol (8/1) (154-155 deg.C m.p.). The white crystal obtd. in such a manner is further crystallized by a slow evaporation method and the planar crystal having good transparency is obtd. from an ethyl acetate soln. The flaky crystal is obtd. from a solvent mixture composed of ethyl acetate/cyclohexane. The large optical nonlinearity, the visible absorption of the short wavelength and the high crystallinity are imparted to the org. nonlinear optical material and the wavelength conversion of the semiconductor laser with the transmission type is enabled.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve crystallinity, preservable stability and workability by consisting the above material of mixed crystals composed of an urea deriv. and benzylidene aniline deriv. CONSTITUTION:The benzylidene aniline deriv. used in this optical material refers to a compd. which is introduced with a toner type group and acceptor type group at both terminals of the base skeleton. The urea deriv. contained in this material refers to a compd. in which at least one amino group hydrogen of urea is substd. with alkyl, hydroxy alkyl, halogen, etc. The urea deriv. has the poroperty to form an intermolecular hydrogen bond with the adjacent other molecular in the crystal, i.e., high hydrogen bond formability. Since the mol.wt. of this molecule is small, the density of the molecules having the optical nonlinearity and occupying per unit area is not lowered and, therefore, this material is effective for forming the mixed crystals. The crystallinity, preservable stability and workability are improved if the optical material is improved by the adoption of the mixed crystals mentioned above by using DNA, NPP, MNA, etc., with which the relatively large nonlinearity in the crystal state is reported.

Namely, the two arom. rings or heteroarom. rings are combined by a hydrazono carbon bond (-NR1-N=CR2-) to constitute a pi electron conjugation system and the substituents having the same group are introduced into both the terminals. The practicable org. nonlinear optical compd. having the large optical nonlinearity and high threshold value of the laser breakdown is thereby obtd.

The resultant compd. includes N-[2-(5- nitrofurfurylidene)]-4-dimethylaminobenzenamine, N-[2-(5-nitrofurfurylidene)]-4- methoxybenzenamine, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide large optical nonlinearity and high breakdown threshold value by incorporating a nitro group as the acceptor type substituent of a specific org. nonlinear optical compd. and an optically active amino group to the donor type substituent thereof. CONSTITUTION:The incorporation of the nitro group as the acceptor type substituent of the org. nonlinear optical compd. expressed by the formula I and the optically active amino group or monomethyl amino group as the donor type substituent thereof is effective in increasing the fluctuation of pi electrons by an optical electric field and increasing the molecular packing density and is preferable for the improvement in the optical nonlinearity of the compd. In the formula I, D denotes the donor type substituent, A denotes the acceptor type substituent, R1-R6 denote hydrogen or an arbitrary substituent; part of the compd. or the entire hydrogen is deuterated. The practicable nonlinear optical compd. having the large three-dimensional optical nonlinearity and the high breakdown threshold value by a laser is obtd. by incorporating the donor type substituent into the 1-position of the naphthalene ring and the acceptor type substituent into the 4-position thereof in the above-mentioned manner.
