A fluid containing system, as in a filter, for toxic or hazardous fluids is provided with rotatable base seals that can be alternatively positioned to permit the flow of fluids from the filter supply line, passing through the filter or, alternatively, the filter supply line can be sealed shut to prevent fluid leakage when the filter is removed. A third filter seal position is provided, wherein a cleaning fluid, for example compressed air, can be supplied to the filter in order to remove excess fluid from the filter prior to removal. An alternative embodiment permits removal of the filter and sealing of the supply line by rotating the filter and seal assembly about the supply line access to save space or to facilitate changing the filter. The fluid containing system can also function as a fluid sampler, or to add materials to the fluid system.

A filtering apparatus is described in which a filter assembly is encapsulated in a flexible, pliable, light weight shell and is removable as a unit from the filter housing without manually contacting filter media and/or liquid. The filter housing comprises a manifold and a cylindrical casing joined together to form a cavity for receiving the cartridge. The manifold further includes inlet and outlet conduits extending therethrough. The filter cartridge comprises a pair of cylindrical shells interconnected at their open ends, with the interior of the shells forming a cavity for receiving a filter assembly. The end plane of one of the cylindrical shells includes a pair of tubular extensions extending into the inlet and outlet conduits of the manifold. The two cartridge shells are made of plastic or other suitable material and are sufficiently flexible to bear against the side walls of the housing cavity during operation. In one embodiment, the mating ends of the cartridge shells are coupled by a telescoping connection and bonded. In another embodiment, the ends of the cartridge shells form mating annular flanges which are bonded together and further secured between two shoulders formed by the interconnecting housing members. The filter assembly preferably comprises a plurality of annular filter pads surrounding a perforated open ended sleeve and stacked between a pair of annular compression plates. To replace the encapsulated filter cartridge, the manifold and casing are separated and the used filter cartridge is removed as a unit. A new cartridge can be installed within the housing in a similar manner.

A high pressure fluid filter provided with a pressure responsive member adapted to remain in unchanged position as long as the pressure acting on both sides of the pressure responsive member is balanced but which, upon an unbalance on either side of the pressure responsive member due to a contaminated filter element, is caused to move towards the side where the pressure is less and to thereby mechanically actuate a visual indicator device to signal the particular condition of the filter element and to further provide a bypassing arrangement to bypass the filter element upon an extremely contaminated condition of the filter element.

The filter element is configured such that when it is removed, fluid flow through the filter is blocked. A filter cartridge including a liner/valve, or support/valve construction is provided. The liner/valve construction provides for contaminant flow to the filter media during normal filtering operation, and contaminant or sediment retention in the cartridge during a servicing operation. The preferred liner/valve construction includes an outer support having a flexible sheet valve positioned therein. The preferred sheet valve includes a plurality of cut valves. Methods of construction, assembly and use are provided.
