A monochromator comprises in an autocollimation arrangement, an entrance/exit slit defined by jaws 5, 6, a mirror 7 and a prism 2 with a mirrored surface 3, the prism and the jaw 6 being fixedly mounted on a turntable 1 with an axis of rotation 4 which extends perpendicularly through the optical axis of the beam of light which passes through the slit, and is parallel to the slit. On a change of wave-length which is effected by rotating the prism 2 on turntable 1, jaw 6 is also rotated altering the width of the slit, which enables the spectral band width of the transmitted radiation to be maintained approximately constant. The initial slit width may be altered by adjusting jaw 5.

To investigate manufacturing defects in offaxis aspherical mirrors, the entry and exit slits of a monochromator are disposed in the flame which passes through the mirror axis and is parallel to the refracting edge of the dispersing prism. As shown, a divergent ray 18 from an inlet slit 11 falls on a mirror 13, which is an off-axial section of a parabolic mirror, and if reflected as a parallel beam 19 to a dispersion prism 14 having a reflecting rear surface 15 so that the beam is reflected back to the mirror 13 from which it is reflected as a convergent beam to a plane mirror 16 and finally forms an image of the inlet slit 11 at the exit slit 12.

The apparatus claimed in the parent Specification is modified in that the rotatable dispersing element is replaced by a stationary dispersing element and a principal mirror rotatable to scan the spectrum across the exit slit, and the image of the entrance slit is formed on the wavelength scale by light reflected by a reflecting plane firmly united with the dispersing element and by an accessory mirror rotatable with the principal mirror. As shown, light from the entrance slit b is collimated by lens c, passes through a dispersing prism d, is reflected back through the prisms of a principal mirror e and is focused by a lens f on the exit slit g. The mirror e is rotatable to vary the wavelength reaching the slit g and is secured to a concave mirror h receiving light from the front surface d or the prism and reflecting it back to that surface to form an image of the slit b at the wavelength scale i.

A monochromator, or other spectroscopic apparatus comprises a Fery prism having a spherical front surface which is refractive and a spherical rear surface which is reflective, the centres of curvature of these surfaces being spaced apart along the circle diagram of the prism on which diagram is also an entrance slit located so that rays therefor are incident at substantially equal angles i on the front surface and are refracted thereby so as to be substantially normal to the rear surface whence they are reflected, refracted once again, and form a spectrum, the entrance slit being curved to a radius R equal to n 2 . f.cotan i/2(n 2-1 ), where f is the focal length of the prism and n its refractive index, whereby a substantially linear image of the entrance slit is produced. Fig. 1 shows a curved entrance slit 12 light from which is reflected by a mirror 16 to the prism 10 having spherical front and rear surfaces 21, 22. This prism acts as a collimator and forms a spectrum, after reflection again at the mirror 16, adjacent the linear exit slit 13. The curvature of the entrance slit compensates the astigmatism introduced by the Fery prism.

    Abstract: 606,976. Speedometers. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Nov. 26, 1945, No. 31839. Convention date, March 21. [Class 97 (i)] The instrument includes an entrance slit, an off-axis parabolic collimating mirror, a Wernicke prism and an exit slit in optical alignment. As shown in Fig. 1, light after passing through an entrance slit 2 is reflected by mirror 3 on to an off-axis parabolic mirror 4 which collimates the beam and directs it to a Wernicke prism. This prism forms the subject-matter of Specification 607,033, and consists of two crown glass sections 5, 6 and a liquid section 7, the whole being surrounded by a jacket 8 through which flows water at a controlled temperature. The prism serves to disperse the rays of light which then fall on to a mirror 9 to be reflected by a parabolic mirror 10 and plane mirror 11 on to the exit slit 12. Mirror 9 is adjustable to bring rays of any one wavelength which emanate from prism 6 into focus at the slit 12. To reduce the instrument's size it may be rendered auto-collimating or the device may be duplicated by employing the exit slit of one as the entrance slit of the other to increase light efficiency. The liquid section 7 of the Wernicke prism is filled with a colourless liquid ester of an acid selected from the group consisting of orthomethoxy cinnamyl fatty acids, paramethoxy cynnamyl fatty acids and cynnamylidene fatty acids.
