Abstract: An ionization detecting fire alarm device that comprises a double chamber structure, a source disposed in at least one of the chambers and a vernier adjusting screw electrode protruding into one chamber. The chamber containing the adjustable electrode is more open to the atmosphere than the other chamber. Porting is provided between chambers and detection occurs by sensing the rate of change of ionization current in the chamber structure. The source or sources, one being in each chamber, is a beta source such as a nickel 63 source. A change in ionization current is detected by a unique circuit of this invention which comprises a programmable unijunction transistor oscillator circuit.

Abstract: 1,088,977. Ionization gauges. ETABLISSEMENT POUR APPLICATIONS ELECTRONIQUES. March 3, 1966 [March 11, 1965; Feb.4, 1966], No.18027/67. Divided out of 1,088,976. Heading G1N. The density or degree of purity of gases, vapours or fumes, is measured by an ionization chamber 2, Fig.4, which is connected in series with a reference ionization chamber 1, also open to the gas under investigation, the distance between the electrodes being arranged so that the chamber has a high ion-recombination rate. In this arrangement both chambers are sensitive to pressure variations in the ambient gas but the measuring chamber is also sensitive to variations occurring in the chemical nature and the degree of concentration of the ambient gas. In the embodiment, the two chambers form a potential divider to a supply source 3, the common point 4 between the chambers being connected to the gate electrode 8 of a metal-oxide semi-conductor device 9, to actuate a meter 11, or relay. Resistances 12, 14 and a negative temperature coefficient resistance 13 form a network compensating for temperature variations of M.O.S device. A load 10, which can be an alarm circuit, a wire or wireless remote control circuit of any electric load in general, which is required, may be inserted either in the source or drain circuit of the M.O.S. device. The ionization chamber 2 consists of a cylindrical perforated electrode (35), Fig. 6 (not shown), with a central cylindrical electrode (32) which carries the radioactive charge. The reference chamber comprises two parallel disc electrodes 5, 6, the former being adjustable on screw (27) to vary the spacing between the electrodes, screw (28) locking the arrangement in position. The radioactive source is placed in the centre of the disc 5. The two chambers are enclosed within an outer chamber (21), Fig. 5 (not shown), having windows (22), (23), covered with metal grids (24), through which the ambient gas can enter the device.

Abstract: 1,131,932. Ionization chambers. W. G. PYE & CO. Ltd. 17 Dec., 1965 [23 Dec., 1964], No. 52266/64. Heading HID. A gas ionization detector for detecting the nature or measuring the amount of a gaseous impurity present in a gas includes an electrode of helical, reticular or like open form surrounding but electrically insulated from an electrically conducting member carrying a source of α or # radiation. The electrode 1 is supported in a P.T.F.E. sheath 2, and is coated at its end with a tritium source 3 which is itself surrounded by a helical collecting electrode 4 supported at one end by an insulating cap 5, and connected at the other end to a portion 6 of a metal cylinder 7 covered by an insulating sheath 8. A heating element 11 is provided in the ring 6; the end 10 remote from the radiation source is formed as a coaxial socket; and a flange 9 is provided for supporting the apparatus. The radiation source may alternatively be radium, preferably gold-plated to reduce the required inter-electrode spacing.

Abstract: 1,080,691. Ionization chambers. J. E. LOVELOCK. Feb. 14, 1964 [Feb. 14, 1963], No. 6109/63. Heading H1D. An ionization detector for use in gas chromatography comprises a chamber through which gas may be caused to flow and a pair of electrodes 11 and 12 associated with the chamber and respectively having plane faces disposed within the chamber and parallel to and facing each other, at least one of said faces having disposed on it a source of beta-radiation such that the range of the radiation in hydrogen or helium at atmospheric pressure is considerably greater than the spacing between said faces, the space 6 between said faces having a volume not substantially exceeding 80 microlitres. As shown, hollow-stemmed stainless steel members 4, 5 and foil electrodes 11 and 12, preferably also of stainless steel, are clamped against an insulating spacer 7 in a body 1 of insulating material such as P.T.F.E. The foils 11 and 12 are apertured to allow the passage of gas. Two circular foils may each have a chordal portion removed at opposite sides of the chamber so that the whole of the gas flow passes between the inner surfaces of the foils which carry a coating of titanium or zirconium containing occluded tritium. The size of the detector chamber may be altered by substituting spacers 7 of different thicknesses or different internal diameters. For operation at temperatures above 225‹ C. or in -outer space, more stable sources such as Sr90 or Y90 may be employed.
