Abstract:
The invention provides methods, compositions, kits, and systems for the sensitive detection of cardiac troponin, Such methods, compositions, kits, and systems are useful in diagnosis, prognosis, and determination of methods of treatment in conditions that involve release of cardiac troponin.
Abstract:
A device (60) for irradiating blood is provided, the device including a chamber (62) having an elongate configuration defining a hollow interior, the chamber formed of reflective material, a tubular cassette (74) sized and shaped to be received in the interior (70) of the chamber, the tubular cassette (74) having an inside diameter sized and shaped to receive a reflective core (78) having an elongate configuration with an exterior diameter smaller than the interior diameter of the cassette to provide a space (75) for receiving and holding blood stationary, and an array of light-emitting members (80) arranged on the chamber for emitting light of at least one wavelength into the interior (70) of the chamber (62) for irradiating and treating the blood inside the cassette (74).
Abstract:
A treatment vessel (50) contains a fluidizable bed (70) of loose particulate material comprising particles of sharp sand adhered to granules of polyethylene to provide a habitat for microorganisms effective in wastewater treatment. The material has a desired density slightly greater than 1.0 g/cc, a specific surface area in excess of 600 m /m , and a particule size range of about 3 mm to 10 mm. The bed and wastewater is fluidized and aerated by air bubbles emitted from self-sealing aerators (71) disposed at the base of the bed and arranged for placement and removal from above the water level. The loose material can rest directly on the aerator surface.
Abstract:
An apertured flexible membrane (10) extends over a domed support (11). A central gas supply tube (50, 82) terminates in gas outlets (51) oriented to direct the gas to flow horizontally into the space (40) between the membrane and the support to inflate the membrane away from the support so that gas from the inflated space discharges through the apertures (60) as fine bubbles and such that when the gas supply ceases the membrane collapses back into area contact with the support to seal all the apertures. This reduces clogging. The aerator is useful in the aeration of sewage or waste water and in fish or eel farms.
Abstract:
A hand dryer (1) includes a fan (4), and a housing defining a fan chamber (16) arranged to receive blown air from the fan (4). The fan chamber 16 comprises an outlet (44) defining the air outlet of the dryer (1) through which air is blown directly to the outside atmosphere. The fan chamber (16) is configured such that it tapers towards the outlet (44) to accelerate air flow therethrough. The outlet (44) comprises an elongate slot and the fan chamber (16) tapers to the elongate slot to optimise drying airflow for hand drying with the letterbox configuration providing an airflow which effectively spans a user's hands during drying.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses methods for the detection and monitoring of a condition in a subject using highly sensitive detection of molecules. The invention provides a method for detecting or monitoring a condition in a subject, comprising detecting a first marker in a first sample from the subject and detecting a second marker, wherein the first marker comprises a biomarker, e.g., Cardiac Troponin-I (cTnl) or Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and wherein the limit of detection of the first marker is less than about 10 pg/ml. The second marker can be a biomarker, physiological marker, a molecular marker or a genetic marker.
Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease, e.g., congestive heart failure, is often first diagnosed after the onset of clinical symptoms, eliminating potential for early intervention. The invention provides a multi-marker immunoassay, including cardiac pathology and vascular inflammation biomarkers, yielding a more sensitive assay for early detection of CHF in plasma. A panel consisting of cardiac pathology (cTnl, BNP) and vascular inflammation (IL-6, TNFα, IL- 17a) biomarkers provided a sensitivity of 94% for association with CHF.
Abstract:
Single molecule analysis of species of use in analytical, diagnostic or prognostic assays is disclosed In exemplary embodiments, the assays utilize samples prepared by the disclosed methods, affording assays of unexpected sensitivity and robustness The method is described in a non-limiting manner by reference to cytokine assays
Abstract:
The invention described herein provides methods, compositions, kits, and systems for the sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen. Such methods, compositions, kits, and systems are useful in diagnosis, prognosis, and determination of methods of treatment in conditions that involve release of prostate specific antigen.
Abstract:
A device for stabilizing a workpiece on a work table is provided that includes a cam member having a spiral-shaped bearing face that engages the workpiece when the workpiece moves in a first direction to urge the workpiece against a table top, fence, or other structure to prevent kickback and that rotates in an opposite direction to allow the workpiece to move without interference toward a working tool associated with the work table. A torsion spring urges the cam member to rotate into constant contact with the workpiece to provide instant reaction to a kickback situation. In addition, the cam member guides the workpiece as it moves on the work table. A base enables adjustment longitudinally, laterally, and orthogonally with respect to the work table.
