    Abstract: A format converter for use with a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) having a transceiver, a wireless local area network (WLAN) having an access point (AP) and a wireless terminal, for providing access to the UMTS by the terminal. The format converter comprises a WLAN transceiver for sending and receiving messages to and from the AP; a UMTS transceiver for sending and receiving messages to and from the transceiver in the UMTS; and a translator for translating WLAN messages to UMTS format and UMTS messages to WLAN format.

    Abstract: The invention relates to establishing a wireless packet session between at least two users. At least one of the users is a wireless user. A first of the at least two users sends a reservation setup protocol (RSVP) PATH messag e to a second user of the two users. The RSVP PATH message includes informatio n for reserving resources for transmissions from only the first user to the second user; or from the first user to the second user and the second user to the first user, or only for transmissions from the second user to the first user. In response to receiving the RSVP PATH message, the second user transmits a RSVP reservation (RESV) message to the first user. Transmissions occur using the reserved resources.

    Abstract: In a communication between a mobile unit (UE) and a gateway general packet radio system (GGRS) support node (GGSN) wherein resource reservations setup protocol (RSVP) capabilities are shared therebetween by a session setup mechanism, preferably session initiation protocol (SIP) in which RSVP capabilities of the UE and GGSN are defined and exchanged. In addition, the SIP is utilized to identify the preferred RSVP mode of operation by negotiations. The SIP is utilized to indicate that: the UE is RSVP capable; those media flows which are based on RSVP; the preferred mode of operation i.e. either UE based RSVP signaling or GGSN proxy based RSVP signaling and to communication a final setup mode for RSVP signaling to the UE from policy control function (PCF). The SIP may also be employed to enable the UE and network to indicate intended quality of service (QoS) protocol during a call setup procedure. The SIP is further utilized to enable the terminating UE and/or network to indicate in their response the capability of supporting a particular QoS protocol, the call being rejected with a clear indication of the cause when the terminating network is not capable of supporting the proposed QoS protocol.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a solution to the handoff problem includes a handoff is triggered by the WLAN network 14 assuming that there is a real time session between PC 12 and a called party, shown at S1. WLAND network 14 communicates with IP network 18, shown at S2, the IP network 18 provides the two-way communication between the PC 12 and service server 22, shown at S3. Both the user PC 12 and UE 32 establish a connection with the network 23 at S4-S6. The user then decides to trigger a handoff from PC 12 to the UE 32 at S7 and communicates this handoff request to the WLAN network 14, which transmits an SIP message through IP network 18 to service server 22. Service server 22 transmits an SIP 200 (OK) message to acknowledge the handoff (HO) message.
