Abstract: Non-ionic surface-active agents having the formula: R - CH-CH2-O---C2H3O-X]pH ¦ O--------C2H3O-X]qH in which R is alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl and alkaryloxyalkyl, having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, X represents a CH2OH or CH2O-CH2-CHOH-CH2OH group, p and q each independently represent a number between 0 and 10 inclusive with the proviso that the sum of p and q is between 1 and 10 inclusive, and methods for preparing said surface-active agents comprising the step of polycondensing n molecules of glycerol epihalohydrin or allylglycidylether with a alpha -diol having the formula: R - CH-CH2-OH ¦ OH hydroxylating the resulting condensate and subjecting the resulting hydroxylated product to ethanolysis.

Compositions for dyeing keratinic fibres, e.g. human hair comprises a) at least one oxidation dye containing an aromatic or heterocyclic nucleus substituted by two amino groups, or by one amino group and one hydroxyl group which groups are ortho or para to one another and b) as coupling component at least one indoline having the formula I in which each of R and R2 which may be the same or different is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group of 1-6 carbon atoms, each of X, and X2 which may be the same or different is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an amino group with the proviso that one of X1 and X2 represents a hydrogen atom, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical of 1-6 carbon atoms with the proviso that R1 is a hydrogen atom when X2 is other than a hydrogen atom, or an acid addition salt thereof. The molar ratio of a) to b) is preferably 1:1 to 1:3 and the pH of aqueous solutions of these compositions is preferably pH 9-10. Oxidising agents, e.g. hydrogen peroxide may also be used. Preferred compounds of formula I above are 6-amino-indoline dihydrochloride, 6-hydroxy-indoline hydrochloride, 1- ethyl-6-amino-indoline dihydrochloride and 1- ethyl-4-hydroxy-indoline hydrobromide.

[Also in Divisions C4 and D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula and salts thereof where one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is of the formula -(CH 2 ) n -N(R 6 )R 7 and the others are hydrogen or alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, n is 2-6, R 6 and R 7 are hydrogen, alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms or form a ring with the nitrogen atom and R 6 is hydrogen, halogen or alkyl or alkoxy of 1-6 carbon atoms, with the proviso that when R 1 or R 2 is -(CH 2 ) n -N(R 6 )R 7 then R 6 and R 7 are not hydrogen. The compounds may be prepared by reacting together compounds of the formulµ where X is halogen or nitro, or by reacting compounds of the formulµ and R 3 -NH-R 4 where X is halogen, arylsulphonating one of the hydrogen atoms on the primary amino group and condensing an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal derivative of the product with a compound of the formula Y-(CH 2 ) n -N(R 6 )R 7 where Y is halogen. Quaternary ammonium and acid addition salts may be formed by the addition of a quaternizing agent or an acid to the compounds. Intermediates isolated are 1-amino, 1-benzenesulphonylamino and 1-N-benzenesulphonylamino - N - # - diethylaminoethylamino - 3 - dimethylamino-4-nitro-6-methylbenzene.

[Also in Divisions C4 and D1] A composition used in the treatment of hair comprises at least one alkylated methylol compound having within its formula at least one group in which R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms or an alkoxymethyl radical, R 1 is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms and the nitrogen atom of the group is bonded directly to a group of the formula or to a carbon atom of a triazine ring, and a perfume. The compound may be bis-methoxymethylurea, methoxymethyl urea, ethoxymethylurea, i-propoxymethylurea, trimethoxymethylmelamine, ethyl dimethoxymethyl carbamate, bis - methoxymethyladipamide or bis-butoxymethylurea. The composition may be an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution, the alcohol optionally being the alcohol used to alkoxylate the corresponding methylol compounds, and may contain 0À2-10% by weight of the compound. The composition may have a pH of 1À5-5 and may contain an acid catalyst, e.g. phosphoric, sulphuric, acetic, citric or lactic acid, monosodium or monopotassium phosphate. Dyestuffs, penetrating agents, surface active agents and other additives, e.g. trimethyl cetyl ammonium bromide and a polyvinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, may also be added to the composition which may be in the form of a cream, emulsion, gel or aerosol.

[Also in Division D1] A composition used in the treatment of hair comprises (1) at least one methylolated compound containing a group of the formula in which R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-5 alkyl radical, E is a radical of the formula or the formula in which R 1 V is a divalent radical, and R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl radical or a radical terminated by a radical of the formula in which R 111 is an alkoxy radical, or when E represents a radical of the formula R, together with E and the adjacent nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring containing an additional nitrogen atom which is adjacent E, and (2) at least one nitrogen-containing compound having a structure similar to that of the methylolated compound except that all the -CH 2 OR 1 radicals attached to nitrogen atoms are replaced by hydrogen atoms or an acid addition salt thereof. The composition may contain an acid polymerization catalyst, e.g. citric, acetic, lactic, phosphoric or sulphuric acid or sodium acid phosphate. The methylolated compound may be monomethylol urea, dimethylol urea, monomethylol thiourea, dimethylol thiourea, trimethylol melamine, monomethylol dicyandiamide, bismethoxymethylurea, monomethylol dimethyl hydantoin, monomethylol ethyleneurea, dimethylol ethylene thiourea, monomethylol guanidine, ethyl monomethylolcarbamate, N,N 1 - dimethylol - (2 - methyl - 2 - propyl) propylenebis-carbamate, dimethylol ethyl methylenebis - carbamate, dimethylol succinamide, dimethylol adipamide, N,N - diethyl - N 1 - methylolurea, dimethylol ethyleneurea, dimethylol ethyl carbamate, tetramethylol acetylenediurea or monomethylol ethylene thiourea, and the nitrogen containing compound may be urea, melamine, dicyandiamide, N,N- diethylurea, ethylene urea, isopropyl carbamate, dimethyl hydantoin, ethylene thiourea, guanidine carbonate or succinamide. The composition may comprise a nitrogen containing compound mixed with the methylolated derivative of the same nitrogen-containing compound. The composition may be in the form of an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution, jelly, cream or aerosol and may also contain surface active agents, foaming agents, dyestuffs and perfumes, e.g. cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, a compound having the formula in which R is an alkyl radical predominantly of 12-14 carbon atoms derived from the fatty acids of copra and violet external DC No. 2.
