Abstract: 1373280 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases SOC FRANCAIS DES PRODUITS POUR CATALYSE 18 April 1972 [19 April 1971 2 Dec 1971] 17919/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division B 1] Nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases containing them in admixture with reducing gases are decomposed by means of a supported nickel, iron, chromium oxide catalyst. The catalyst comprises a carrier and from 3-20 wt per cent of the catalyst of an active phase M x (M' y M" z ) O t wherein M is divalent Ni, Mg, Ca, Mn, Cu, Zn, Co and/or Fe, M' is trivalent Fe, Al, Mn, V, Sc, Y and/or a lanthanide, M" is trivalent Cr, Al, Mn, V, Sc, Y and/or a lanthanide, x is 0À5-1À5, y'/y+z is 0À01 to 0À09, y + z is 1À5-3 and t is less than 10 with the proviso that at least 50 atom per cent of each of M, M' and M" are Ni, Fe and Cr respectively. A platinum group metal may also be deposited on the carrier or the catalyst may be mixed with a supported platinum group metal catalyst. The preferred carriers are alumina and/or spinel.

Abstract: In a process for preparing 3-halo- and 3,5-dihalo-phenols (which are known intermediates esp. useful in the prepn. of plant-protection agents), halophenols of formula (I): (where X is halogen; and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H, halogen or alkyl, >=1 of R1-R4 being halogen, and R3 can also be H, and must be halogen when 3,5-dihalophenols are being prepd.) are treated with H2 at elevated temp. in the presence of catalysts contg. gp. 8 noble metals (esp. Pt or Pd) and S and/or S cpds. The dehalogenation of (I) is simple to carry out and leads selectively to 3-halo- or 3,5-dihalo-phenols. Starting phenols contg. phenol impurities without halogen in the 3- or 5-position can be used, since the impurities are converted into phenol which can readily be sepd. from the desired prod. by distn.

Abstract: 1,246,015. Supported palladium-gold catalysts. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 17 Jan., 1969 [1 Feb., 1968; 28 Sept., 1968], No. 2754/69. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A supported catalyst containing palladium and gold is prepared by impregnating the catalyst support, simultaneously or successively with or without intermediate drying, with a solution A and a solution B in optional order or with the combined solutions A and B, the solution A containing dissolved salts of palladium and gold and the solution B containing compounds which are able to react on the catalyst support with the noble metal salts of the solution A to form water-insoluble noble metal compounds which are practically free from halogen, sulphur and nitrogen; in quantities which correspond to from 10 to 110% of the absorptive capacity of the catalyst support for these solutions; subjecting the catalyst support impregnated with solutions A and B to a temperature of 0 to 100‹C for 1 to 100 hours which is such that at 95% at least of the impregnated palladium and 95% at least of the impregnated gold is transformed into water-insoluble noble metal compounds, treating the water-insoluble noble metal compounds with reducing agents so as to convert those compounds substantially into the corresponding noble metals and removing the water-soluble compounds which are containing in the catalyst by washing, before or after the reduction step. The catalyst is used in the production of vinyl esters by reacting ethylene, a carboxylic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen in the gas phase of elevated temperature and normal or elevated pressure.
