    Abstract: 1304815 Reforming &c hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 9 June 1971 [25 June 1970(4)] 19565/71 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbon feedstocks are converted at 200-1,000‹ F. by contact, in the presence of hydrogen, with a catalyst composition comprising a metal of groups VIB, VIIB or VIII or a compound thereof, alumina, or aluniosilicate and 0À5 to 15À0 wt. per cent fluorine, the composition having being fluorided by contact at 200-1,200‹ F. with a mixture of hydrogen or carbon monoxide with sulphur hexafluoride, sulphuryl fluoride or thionyl fluoride (see Division B1). Specified conversion processes are hydrocracking, hydroisomerization, disproportionation, alkylation, polymerization, rereforming and hydrogenation. Fluorided platinized aluminas are said to be suitable for the hydrocracking and hydroisomerization of waxes, slack wax, or middle distillate oils at 550-800‹ F., 300 to 250 p.s.i.g. and a LUSV of 1 to 20. The examples describe: (i) hydrocracking and isomerization of a C 10 -C 14 normal paraffin; (ii) hydrocracking light cycle gas oils; (iii) wax isomerization to reduce the pour point of a slack wax; and (iv) hydroisomerization of n-hexane.

    Abstract: 1357259 Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Sept 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 43457/72 Heading C5E Methylated aromatic hydrocarbons are made by (a) catalytically disproportionating toluene feed in the presence of H 2 in reactor 4, (b) fractionating in tower 8 to provide benzene, toluene, C 8 hydrocarbons, and C 9 and heavier hydrocarbon fractions (the latter containing ethylated aromatics) and recycling (via 12) the toluene fraction to (a), (c) catalytically disproportionating the C 8 fraction from (b) in reactor 20 in the presence of H 2 to form benzene, toluene, trimethyl benzenes, tetramethylbenzenes and ethylated aromatics, (d) fractionating in fractionator 26 the product from (c) into a C 6 -C 8 fraction, a C 9 fraction, and a C 10 and heavier fraction which latter is recovered, and recycling the C 6 -C 8 fraction via 30 to fractionator 8, (e) the C 9 fraction recovered from (d) being free from ethylated aromatics and preferably being fractionated to give xylenes, mesitylene, pseudo cumene and hemimellitene, which latter two can be recycled to step (c). The C 9 and heavier fractions of step (b) are withdrawn from fractionator (9) and de-ethylated in de-ethylator 70 to give benzene and methyl benzenes, together with the C 10 fraction from fractionator 26 which has been fractionated again in fractionator 52. The 188-195‹ C. boiling fraction from 52 is cooled to produce durene crystals. The disproportionation catalyst is preferably sulphided Group VIII metal on hydrogen mordenite and alumina.

    Abstract: 1422433 Disproportionating toluene TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 5 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 41717/73 Heading C5E Toluene is disproportionated to give benzene and xylenes by contact, in the presence of a sulphide compound, with a catalyst comprising (a) a mordenite-derived hydrogen aluminosilicate having a SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 mole ratio of greater than 10 : 1 and (b) a sulphided Group VIII metal, e.g. Co or Ni. Suitable sulphide compounds present during the disproportionation are mercaptans, methyldisulphide or H 2 S. The catalyst may also comprise alumina and H 2 may be present.

    Abstract: 1,191,094. Disproportionating alkylaromatic hydrocarbons. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 Feb., 1969 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 5625/69. Heading C5E. Alkylaromatic hydrocarbons are disproportionated by contacting them admixed with a sulphide compound under disproportionation conditions with hydrogen mordenite having a SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 mole ratio greater than 10: 1 and a sulphided Group VIII and/or VI B metal associated therewith. The alkylaromatic feed may be methylnaphthalene or an alkylbenzene having one to three C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups, e.g. toluene, xylene, mesitylene, ethylbenzene or cumene. The Group VIII metal may be Pt, Pd, Rh or Ru in amount 0À05-2% by wt. of the mordenite, or Ni, Co or Fe in amount 0À5-10% by wt. of the mordenite. The Group VIB metal (Cr, Mo, W) may be used in amount 0À5-20% by wt. The sulphide compound may be H 2 S, CS 2 , methyl sulphide or ethylmercaptan. The process is preferably conducted in the presence of hydrogen. Suitable disproportionation conditions comprise a temperature of 400-750‹ F. and a pressure of 0-1000 p.s.i.g. Mordenite catalysts having a sufficient SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 mole ratio may be produced by acid leaching e.g. with boiling dilute HCl. Examples of the invention describe the disproportionation of toluene to benzene and C 8 aromatics.
