Abstract: 1308073 Lactams UZINA DE FIBRE SINTETICE SAVINESTI 18 Feb 1970 7882/70 Heading C2C Lactams are prepared by reacting a cycloalkane and nitric oxide mixed with (a) a halogen and a halogen hydracid or (b) a nitrosyl halide with or without a halogen hydracid in the presence of an alkali metal, ammonium or alkylammonium acid sulphate or pyrosulphate catalyst in the molten state at 150-650‹ C. with a contact time of 0À05 to 10 seconds. The molar ratio of halogen or nitrosyl halide to nitrogen oxide and to hydrocarbon is 1 : 2 : 2 to 1 : 40 : 40. The cycloalkane may be cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cycloheptane, cyclooctane, cyclododecane or methylcyclohexane. In the examples #-caprolactam and valerolaotam are produced from cyclohexane, Cl 2 , NO and HCl and cyclopentane, Cl 2 , NO and HCl respectively.

[Also in Division C2] Apparatus used for the nitrosation of cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids to produce lactams comprises a drum 1 having inlets 16 and outlet 17 for liquid reactants and products at its ends, outlets 13 for the venting of gas produced during the reaction, and a shaft 2 provided with stirring elements 3 rotatable about an axis parallel to and below the longitudinal axis of the drum. The ratio of the diameter to length of the drum is from 1:1 to 1:50 and the drum may be mounted horizontally or at an angle of inclination of up to 30‹ to the horizontal. The drum may be provided with a jacket 9 for heat-transfer purposes. In addition, pipes through which a heat transfer medium may be circulated may be located within the drum, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The process may be carried out at a pressure either below or above atmospheric pressure.

In consumable electrode arc-welding, the feed rate of the electrode is varied cyclically to achieve a pulsed arc-type welding. A power supply with a dropping, constant or rising characteristic may be used. The maximum feed rate of each cycle is such as to produce spray transfer. Metal transfer does not occur during the greater part of each cycle. Mild steel may be so welded with a shielding gas of 98% argon, 2% oxygen. The electrode may be fed by a programmed automatically controlled variablespeed motor. In one modification, the electrode 30, Fig. 6, is fed by a motor-driven eccentric feed roll 40 which co-operates with a spring- loaded idler roll. In another modification, the variation in feed rate is achieved by laterally oscillating a flexible guide tube 66, Fig. 7, for the electrode 30 by a double acting pneumatic cylinder 68.

Lactams are prepared by reacting a cyoloalkane, preferably of 5-12 C atoms, with a nitrosating agent in the presence of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, HCl and an active light and contacting the cycloalkanone oxime or its hydrochloride obtained with a cyano compound as a Beckmann rearrangement catalyst, also in the presence of an aliphatic carboxylic acid and HCl. The aliphatic carboxylic acid is preferably an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 1-4 carbon atoms, e.g. acetic acid. The Beckmann rearrangement catalyst is advantageously a cyano compound such as HCN, KCN or acetonitrile. The cycloalkanone oxime prepared in the first reaction may be reacted in the crude state, i.e. containing aliphatic carboxylic acid and HCl, with the Beckmann rearrangement catalyst. Alternatively, the oxime may be partially purified by treatment with a cyclo. alkane. In the examples, cyclopentane is converted to piperidone and cyclohexane to caprolactam.
