    Abstract: A process for the preparation of a polyamide comprises polymerizing a lactam having at least 7 ring members in the lactam ring at a temperature above the melting point of the lactam but below the decomposition temperature of the polyamide, in the presence of an anionic catalyst and, as promoter, a di-(2-lactim) ether derived from a lactam having at least 7 members in the lactam ring. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, enantholactam, caprylolactam and laurolactam. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals (including magnesium) and the basic reacting compounds thereof. Cross-linking agents, e.g. methylene-bis-caprolactam and isopropylidene-bis-caprolactam; fillers, e.g. sand; pigments, e.g. carbon black; blowing agents, e.g. azides and reinforcing agents, e.g. glass fibres, steel fibres, steel rods or organic fibres may also be present in the reaction mixture.
