Abstract: A touch screen computer executes an application. A method of operating the touch screen computer in response to a user is provided. A virtual input device is provided on the touch screen. The virtual input device comprises a plurality of virtual keys. It is detected that a user has touched the touch screen to nominally activate at least one virtual key, and a behavior of the user with respect to touch is determined. The determined behavior is processed and a predetermined characteristic is associated with the nominally-activated at least one virtual key. A reaction to the nominal activation is determined based at least in part on a result of processing the determined behavior.

Abstract: A system which enables battery powered devices such as notebook computers to efficiently charge smaller mobile devices such as music players, cell phones and PDAs using the power signals provided over their data connections is made more efficient by ensuring that the power to the small mobile device is not interrupted should the notebook computer otherwise go into a standby or low-power state. The presence of the small mobile device is known and any power-down capabilities of the notebook computer are limited, at least for the period where the small mobile device is being recharged. This detection can be done at any of the levels of software present in the notebook computer. This charging and not powering down can be further optimized by determining the particular device and its charging requirements or by having the device provide feedback as to its charge state.

Abstract: System that wakes up a sleeping target system (110) on a target LAN from a remote system (102) located on a remote LAN (104) . Since the sleeping target system (110) is in a sleep state, it receives packets of a lower-layer protocol which cannot be used by the remote system (102) to directly send packets to the sleeping target system. During operation, the remote system creates a wake-up packet (304) . The remote system (102) then uses a second protocol to send the wake-up packet to a relay agent (112) located on the target LAN. Upon receiving the first wake-up packet, the relay agent uses the lower-layer protocol to send a second wake-up packet to the sleeping target system (312) , which wakes up (316) .

Abstract: The present invention provides a search capability to allow a user to easily locate a preference control, file, folder, control, or other system resource or data item associated with a search result. In one embodiment, a user enters a search term (or a portion thereof) in a search field associated with one or more resource types that may be searched. The user may be presented with a pop-up menu containing a list of likely matches. The user selects the desired preference control from the pop-up menu, and the corresponding preference pane, or other container, containing the selected data item, control, or other resource is displayed. In one aspect, as the user enters the search term (or portion thereof), certain icons are highlighted. Specifically, those icons that represent containers containing matching data items (such as preference panes having controls that match the search term) are highlighted. Different types of highlighting can be used depending on the degree of certainty as to which container is likely to contain the correct match.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for processing media data for transmission in a data cornmunication medium and for use with data processing Systems. One exemplary method processes readable content stored in a stream or set of data which contains samples for presenting a presentation (e.g. video only or audio only or video and audio together) at a plurality of scales of scalable content. A second stream is derived from a first stream, where the second stream contains references to the first stream for use in selecting data, for an operating point within the scalable content, from the first stream. In one aspect of this method, references contained in the second stream are accessed to transmit or störe the data from the first stream.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention determines if a domain name system (DNS) server is flawed. During operation, the system sends a special exploratory query to the DNS server, wherein the exploratory query is constructed to detect the existence of a flaw in the DNS server. If the answer from the DNS server indicates that a flaw exists in the DNS server, the system takes remedial action. Another embodiment detects a non-compliant router that incorrectly responds to all address-resolution-protocol (ARP) requests, including ARP requests for link-local IP addresses. This embodiment sends an ARP request asking for an Ethernet address associated with a reserved link-local IP address, which should not be assigned to any device. If a response is received to the ARP request, the system determines that the response was sent by a non-compliant router that incorrectly responds to all ARP requests, including ARP requests for link-local IP addresses.

Abstract: A graphics object can be expressed using procedural language embedded in a markup language document. In an embodiment, a drawing space is specified in markup language. A drawing command to arbitrarily draw a graphics object into the drawing space is specified in procedural language. Interpretation of the markup and procedural language commands results in the rendering of the arbitrary graphics object. In another embodiment, there is a browser comprising a rendering engine, an interpreter, and parser. The rendering engine is configured to interpret a markup language instruction that specifies a drawing space as well as drawing commands in procedural language for drawing an arbitrary graphical object into the drawing space. The parser can then parse the drawing commands and convert them into an execution tree of tree objects.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for displaying digital images on a display is provided. A pile of images that includes a plurality of images arranged in a first arrangement in which at least one image in the pile overlaps with at least one other image in the pile is displayed. Location data that indicates the location of each image in the first arrangement is stored. In response to first user input while the images of the pile are displayed in the first arrangement, without changing the location data, the images that belong to the pile are displayed in a second arrangement in which no image in the pile overlaps with any other image of the pile. In response to second user input while the images of the pile are displayed in the second arrangement, the pile of images are redisplayed in the first arrangement based on the location data.
