    Abstract: A method of modifying the viscosity characteristic of a starchy flour by physical treatment, including beating in alcohol in a confined zone. The resulting starchy flour exhibits thin-thick viscosity characteristics when beated, and provides added viscosity in acid systems without breaking down. It has particular application to baby food recipes to impart desired texture and mouthfeel. Oat flour is the presently preferred starchy flour to be treated for use in baby foods. In one embodiment, a starchy flour is slurried in aqueous organic liquid, preferably ethanol, and is then subjected to heat and pressure for a predetermined time to modify the physical properties of the flour. The specific combination of pressure, temperature, and heating time determine the properties of the treated flour. The alcohol treatment of the starchy flour may be performed continuously by forcing the starchy flour slurried in alcohol through a tubular confined zone under the required conditions of heat, pressure and residence time in the reactor to accomplish the desired physical changes. The continuous process greatly improves production rates.

    Abstract: Acrylic copolymer solutions having a Tg less than O"C., a weight average molecular size ranging from about 20,000 to about 50,000 and consisting essentially of about 4-14% ethylenically unsaturated acid, about 80-95% methyl acrylate and/or ethyl acrylate and about 1-8% lower alkyl methacrylate are obtained by copolymerizing the comonomers in the presence of * an organic solvent which functions as a chain terminator. Water-borne, heatcurable, internal can coating compositions may be prepared by formulating these acrylic copolymer solutions with aqueous ammonia and a water-dispersible, cross-linking reagent.

    Abstract: Acidophilic and acidoduric streptomycetes strains have been found to produce carbohydrases. These Streptomyces effectively elaborate glucose isomerase under acid conditions typically unfavorable for growth of conventional glucose isomerase producing Streptomyces. Sterilization of the culture and production media may be avoided by selectively propagating newly discovered Streptomyces acidodurans under acidic conditions which will effectively eliminate contaminating microorganisms. The Streptomyces acidodurane herein also have the ability to undergo cultivation and elaborate glucose isomerase over a relatively broad pH range. Constitutive streptomycetes strains have also been isolated. Glucose isomerases derived from these Streptomyces strains are particularly effective for isomerizing glucose syrups to fructosecontaining syrups.

    Abstract: Improved pullulanase yields are achieved by incubating culture mediums containing pullulanase producing mutants of the Klebsiella genus. The mutants generally produce approximately equivalent amounts of extracellular and superficially bound pullulanase in an easily recoverable and usable form. Optimum pullulanase production is achieved when amylopectin is used as the sole carbohydrate source. Conventional pullulanase inducers such as maltose, maltotriose and/or pullulan repress the mutant strains capacity to produce pullulanase. The mutants are capable of elaborating pullulanase in a culture media containing dextrose as the sole carbohydrate source.

    Abstract: A nutritious vegetable seed solubles binder for animal feed blocks. The subject vegetable seed solubles contain about 80% by weight carbohydrate and up to about 24% by weight protein on a dry substance basis. The new binder may be used as a complete or partial replacement for cane molasses as a binder in animal feed blocks, including those such as molasses/salt blocks, medicated feed blocks and high protein feed blocks. The subject vegetable seed solubles may also be combined with soybean hulls, bagasse or such similar material to make an ingredient which is then used to make animal feed blocks.

    Abstract: Process and articles for forming line, halftone or continuous-tone images which comprises: exposing to actinic radiation in image-receiving manner a solid, positive-acting or negative-acting light-sensitive organic layer having a thickness of at least 0.1 micron, said layer being capable of developing a Rd of 0.2 to 2.2; continuing the exposure to either clear the background of positive-acting light-sensitive layers or to establish a potential Rd of 0.2 to 2.2 with negative-acting light-sensitive organic layers; applying to said layer of organic material, free-flowing powder particles having a diameter, along at least one axis of at least about 0.3 micron but less than 25 times the thickness of said organic layer; while the layer is at a temperature below the melting points of the powder and of the organic layer, physically embedding said powder particles as a monolayer in a stratum at the surface of said light-sensitive layer to yield images having portions varying in density in proportion to the light exposure of each portion; and removing nonembedded particles from said organic layer to develop an image.
