Abstract: A method and apparatus for reforming and straightening damaged bodies of vehicles whereby corrective forces are applied to the vehicle through one or more elongated force transmitting elements. A measuring bridge is coupled to the vehicle by means of a plurality of vertical elements. The vertical elements attached to datum points on undamaged portions of the vehicle are restrained from movement relative to the measuring bridge to properly orient it to the vehicle. In addition, vertical elements attached to datum points in damaged portions of a vehicle are supported on the bridge for movement in two perpendicular directions and a plane parallel to the vehicle and are extensible along their length to permit the vertical elements to follow the reforming of the vehicle during the application of force. The measuring bridge is supported by a plurality of air pressure cylinders to maintain proper orientation of the bridge with respect to the vehicle.

Abstract: CABLE BENDER A cable bender apparatus for bending cables, for example of the type having thermoplastic insulation around copper or aluminum strands. The apparatus is connected to a cable for bending the latter to any desired degree and is actuated by, for example, a single acting fluid cylinder. The bending shoe is adjustable on a bending yoke so as to accommodate cable of different diameters and will not inadvertently become disassembled upon relaxation of the bending pressure. The bending saddle swings as the cable is being bent and the arrangement is such that the saddle remains perpendicular to the cable and will not cause the insulation to be ruined as the saddle slides slightly along the insulation.

Abstract: A double-acting regeneratively controlled piston-cylinder device or tilt cylinder for tilting a spring-supported truck cab relative to the truck chassis to permit access to the truck engine positioned below the cab embodies means therein which enable slight relative reciprocating movement of the piston and cylinder from an "at rest" position in response to slight relative bouncing movement of the cab with respect to the chassis as the truck operates over-the-road. The piston-cylinder device is of the double-acting type and embodies means to provide an oil passage around the piston over part of the piston stroke. The oil passage may take the form of a concentric chamber, an eccentric chamber, a helical groove, or a longitudinal groove, each formed in the cylinder wall or may be a separate tube on the cylinder for by-passing the piston. Relative piston-cylinder motion results because, if the piston is pushed inwardly of the cylinder by cab bounce, oil can escape from the base end of the cylinder via the passage to the rod end of the cylinder. Or, if the piston is pulled outwardly of the cylinder by cab bounce, oil can flow from the rod end of the cylinder via the passage to the base end of the cylinder.

Abstract: Vehicle brake testing apparatus of the type in which there are yieldable restrained pairs of tread plates engaging the front wheels and rear wheels of a vehicle in which there is means for producing an electrical signal depending in value upon the braking force on each wheel, means for producing a total braking force signal depending upon the sums of the signals, means for measuring the speed of the vehicle as it is driven onto the tread plates and producing an electrical speed signal, means for dividing the integrated total force signal by the speed signal to obtain a weight signal indicative of the weight of the vehicle and means for comparing the total force signal with the weight signal to obtain an indication of the ratio between the total braking force and the weight of the vehicle and indicating whether this ratio meets acceptable standards. The apparatus employs digital processing equipment with means for converting the analog signals resulting from actuation of the tread plates to digital signals and computing means for computing the values of various relations between the values of the various digital signals and displaying these relationships. Among the relations which are displayed are the value of the ratio between the difference in the front wheel braking signals and the the front wheel braking signal which is the maximum of the two braking signals. Another ratio which is displayed is the same ratio in connection with the rear wheel braking signals. Another ratio which is computed and displayed is the value of the relation between the total of the front wheel braking signals and the total of the braking signals of all four wheels.

Abstract: A hydraulic system and latching mechanism for a cab tiltably mounted to the chassis of a vehicle. The cab is normally disposed over the engine of the vehicle and is pivotally attached to the chassis at its forward end for movement through 90 DEG . The cab is powered by an air-motor-actuated hydraulic pump which energizes lifting cylinders disposed between the chassis and cab. When the system is energized, a hydraulically actuated latch is released prior to commencement of the tilting movement of the cab. A direction-control valve is employed which, when in the neutral or closed position, utilizes the pressures generated in the hydraulic system by the weight of the tilted cab in certain positions to assist the valve in sealing the reservoir port in the valve against leakage thereby preventing the cab from creeping.
