    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a rotary valve of reduced usage of high pressure gas by providing flow passages for blowing and extracting of gas in the spaces on both sides in the axial direction of the rotor of the rotary valve and carrying out the material to be conveyed entering said spaces through the extracting passage. CONSTITUTION:The raw material in the pocket C of a rotor 2 is sent out to a high pressure side outlet II by a high pressure gas in the same manner as with conventional rotary valves. However, the high pressure gas is fed into spaces A, B while automatic stop valves V3, V4 are open. This is so constituted also that part of the raw material entering the spaces A, B while automatic stop valves V1, V2 are open is returned to a low pressure side inletI by said high pressure gas. Hence, the usage of the high pressure gas is less than that with conventional rotary valves, and there is no need for keeping the pressure in the spaces A, B higher than the pressure in the outlet II. As a result, the life of gland packings 5, 9 is maintained long.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved gas gate for interconnecting regions of differing gaseous composition and/or pressure, more particularly between atmosphere and a vacuum. The gas gate includes a cylinder within a housing situated between the regions of differing gaseous pressure. A web of substrate material is adapted to move between the regions with at least one roller in the first region and at least one roller in the second region. The rollers are positioned to create sufficient tension as the web advances over the top peripheral portion of the cylinder between the two regions or under the bottom peripheral portion of the cylinder between the two regions. In an exemplary embodiment, the gas gate is characterized by the height of the passageway between the top plate of the housing and web of substrate advancing over the top peripheral portion of the cylinder and the height of the passageway between the bottom plate of the housing and the bottom peripheral portion of the cylinder. The flow rate of the gas therethrough provides for transonic flow of the gas between the cylinder inlets and at least one of the two interconnected regions, thereby effectively isolating one region, characterized by one composition and pressure, from another region, having a differing composition and/or pressure, by decreasing the mean-free-path length between collisions of diffusing species within the transonic flow region.
