Abstract: Method and appts. for carrying out catalysed chemical reactions and for studying catalysis comprises (a) introducing a very rapid pulse of a reactant gas to a catalyst zone in an enclosure under a substantial vaccum, (b) passing the pulse of reactant gas through the catalyst zone to produce a pulse of product gas, (c) resolving the pulse of product gas to produce a resolved pulse of product gas in which the molecules of product gas are moving in substantially parallel paths, and (d) analysing the resolved pulse of product gas in real time, and in coordination with the arrival of the resolved product pulse.
