Abstract: An adaptive laser system (10) incorporates a laser (12) and a novel system and method for determining the slope distribution of a laser beam wavefront. The sensor comprises a ramp filter (16) with a continuous monotonically varying transmittance function and two intensity distribution sensors (18 and 20). Lenses (24, 26 and 28) are provided for focusing and collimating the laser beam as appropriate. A processor (22) calculates the slope distribution from the two intensity distributions obtained by the intensity sensors. The slope calculations can be used to determine commands to predistort the laser beam to approximate a desired flat wavefront at the sensor. The transmittance function of the ramp filter is linear and its spatial width is considerably larger than the expected spreading of the beam due to distorsions in the wavefront. Accordingly, the slope distribution is calculated by pointwise differencing the intensities, normalizing by dividing by the sum of the intensities, and scaling by a factor of one half. Accordingly, a solid state slope sensor which is fast, reliable, economical, and capable of high-resolution evaluations of pulsed as well as continuous wave laser beams is provided.

Abstract: A colour detection and/or recognition apparatus comprises a twin row array (16) of detector elements, each element being arranged to produce an electrical signal on detection of a given colour. The two rows (21, 22) each comprise a plurality of groups of detector elements, with the elements in each group of at least one of the arrays being sensitive to a respective different colour, with corresponding elements in the two rows being sensitive to different colours, and with the four elements of adjacent corresponding pairs of elements in the two rows being sensitive to at least three different colours. The electrical signals are processed to provide a determination of the detection of colour or the recognition of a colour. The two rows of detector elements, typically photosensitive sites in CCD arrays, may be formed closely adjacent one another on the same semiconductor substrate, together with CCD shift registers (23, 24) along the outide edges of the two rows. A line buffer delay circuit (25) may be provided for the outputs of one of the rows.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method comprising: sending radiation pulses (i), i=1, . . . , M one by one toward an object and toward an image sensor as the image sensor moves nonstop in a first direction with respect to the object; and for each value of i, capturing with the image sensor a partial image (i) of the object using radiation of the radiation pulse (i) that has transmitted through the object. The image sensor comprises N active areas. Each active area of the N active areas comprises multiple sensing elements. For each value of i, the radiation pulse (i) has a pulse duration during which the image sensor travels a distance shorter than a width measured in the first direction of any sensing element of the image sensor. M and N are integers greater than 1.

Abstract: A method of detecting pulsed radiation comprising the steps of irradiating at least a portion of an array of sensor elements with pulsed radiation (71); addressing the array using a rolling shutter operation (72); reading the array to obtain a radiation image (73); and then applying a pulse detection operation (74) to the radiation image. The rolling shutter operation (72) is configured to address each element line of the array for a predetermined integration period. The predetermined integration period being calculated using an integration period function, itself a function of an anticipated pulse repetition interval of the pulsed radiation. The method and apparatus for the same enable low cost camera arrays to be used for pulse detection and for wider application in the field of low cost communications.
