Abstract:
A coherent material is formed on a substrate ( 10 ) by providing a precursor suspension ( 14 ) in which particulates are suspended in a carrier fluid, and directing the precursor suspension ( 14 ) at the substrate ( 10 ) from a first source ( 12 ). Generally contemporaneously with application of the deposited precursor suspension ( 14 ) to the surface, hot gases, e.g. hot gases produced by a flame ( 16 ), are directed at the substrate ( 10 ) from a remote second source ( 18 ) to fuse the particulates into the coherent material.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method for the production of temperature-resistant plastic films on diaphragm-gland surfaces, a plasma or acetylene/oxygen flame being produced from a plasma or flame spray gun which, using a cooling-gas flow of 40 to 150 SLpM, melts a plastic material and sprays it on to the diaphragm-gland surface. Coatings produced by this method have layer structures ranging from impermeable to porous and can be utilized at up to 250 °C when poly(phenylene sulphides) are used as the plastic material.
Abstract:
On spray-forming metals onto a substrate from which the sprayed coating is to be detached, unwanted adhesion may occur, even to a smooth substrate. Conversely, if the coating is meant to adhere, it may accidentally delaminate, even from a roughened substrate. By vibrating the substrate, marginally adherent splats will be encouraged to detach themselves while, on the other hand, well adherent splats will not be affected.

A coating composition applied to a substrate by a thermal spray process which consists essentially of from about 11.0 to about 18.0 weight percent cobalt, from about 2.0 to about 6.0 weight percent chromium, from about 3.0 to about 4.5 weight percent carbon and the balance tungsten.
Abstract:
A method of surface treatment of a member made of heat-resistant alloy comprises spraying onto the surface of said member as a first layer a coating of a heat resistant material comprising for example a metal such as Ni or Cr or a Ni-Cr alloy or a compound thereof. A liquid coating containing a corrosion resistant material is then applied as a second layer on to the first layer. The member is then heat treated to .effect penetration by diffusion of one coating into the other.
Abstract:
A method of applying a lubricious coating of a material such as a fluoropolymer to a cutting edge of a blade includes providing the blade having the cutting edge including a tip end, a first facet, and a second facet with the first facet and the second facet adjacent the tip end. The method further includes generating a plasma stream and directing the plasma stream towards the cutting edge. The method further includes introducing a fluid stream containing a dispersion including the fluoropolymer into the plasma stream, thereby simultaneously plasma treating the cutting edge and depositing solids of the dispersion onto the cutting edge.
Abstract:
A thermal spray apparatus to apply coatings to external and internal surfaces in restricted areas is provided. The apparatus includes: a fuel input line; an oxidizing gas input line; coolant input and outlet; a combustion chamber that facilitates primary combustion; a diverging section that splits the primary combustion flow into two or more streams; an elbow section that redirects the combustion streams; a convergent/divergent nozzle; a convergence section that recombines the combustion streams into a single combustion stream within an injection zone of the convergent/divergent nozzle; and a feedstock injector for the injection of feedstock material for forming said coatings into said injection zone of the convergent/divergent nozzle; wherein the convergent/divergent nozzle has a nozzle throat downstream of the injection zone whereby in operation the injection pressure of the feedstock material upstream of the nozzle throat approximates the pressure of the combustion stream within the injection zone. The apparatus may also include the use of an accelerating gas.
