The stepped-index fiber optic (58) includes a core (60) suitable for transmission of laser radiation, which in encompassed by at least one cladding layer (62, 63) and a buffer layer (64), in which the refractive index value for the core (60) is greater than the refractive index of the cladding layer (62, 63), and the refractive index of the cladding (62, 63) layer is greater than the refractive index of the buffer layer (64), so that laser radiation transmitted into the cladding layer (62, 63) is transmitted through the fiber (58). Single index fibers having several diameters may be coupled to the apparatus.

Quality control compositions suitable as sample specimens to measure performance of DNA probe tests which determine cytogenetic abnormalities, such as chromosome copy number, of cells in a tissue sample are disclosed. The control compositions comprise a suspension of fixed cells having an articifial concentration of cells exhibiting chromosome specific aneuploidy in one or more specific chromosomes.
Abstract:
Polyamide filaments stabilized with a copper-containing stabilizer and a polyolefin synergist exhibit substantially improved dry heat stability. The filaments withstand processing at elevated temperatures and are particularly useful in applications where extended exposure to elevated temperatures in air is contemplated.
