Abstract:
A polarization light splitting film having a light receiving side and a light transmitting side. The polarization light splitting film includes an optical rotation selection layer at the light receiving side for reflecting one of right and left circularly polarized components of a light beam that is incident on the light receiving side and for transmitting the other one of the right and left circular polarization components of the light beam, and a quarter-wave layer laminated over the optical rotation selection layer at the light transmitting side.
Abstract:
A liquid crystal display (LCD) panel employs a cholesteric polarizer which passes light of a first circular polarization, but reflects light of a second circular polarization. The LCD panel may be monochrome or color; in the color embodiments, several different color filters are used, each having one or more cholesteric polarizers tuned to a specific bandwidth in the visible spectrum. These polarizers replace dyed (neutral or dichroic) polarizers of prior art LCD panels, and provide improved color purity. The invention may be enhanced by providing a light recycling scheme whereby the handedness of the circularly polarized light reflected by the polarizers is changed and redirected back to the polarizers. This recycling scheme may also be adapted to provide an overhead projector having a high output polarized light source, particularly useful in conjunction with an LCD panel.
Abstract:
Display device with an illumination system, a wideband (cholesteric) reflector and a switchable electro-optical medium (liquid crystal cell) between the reflector and an analyser, in which various parameters (for example, twist angle, angle between the orientation plane and polarization plane as well as the thickness of the panel) have been optimized.
Abstract:
Abstract:
The efficiency of LC displays is improved by the use of a polymeric chiral nematic liquid crystal rear polarizer and reflective backlight housing which increases the net transmission of light and, at the same time, reduces the weight of the assemblage and increases battery life by utilizing lower levels of illumination. The polymeric chiral nematic liquid crystal can be a freestanding film or films, or can be supported by a single glass substrate. The liquid crystal polarizer can have a bandwidth sufficient to transmit electromagnetic radiation across the entire visible spectrum.
Abstract:
A color liquid crystal display and display material formed by microdroplets of chiral or cholesteric liquid crystal phase dispersed in a polymeric matrix. The liquid crystal in the microdroplets exhibits strong negative dielectric anisotropy so that in the presence of an electric field the helical planes of the chiral material align perpendicular to the field. Incident light is reflected at a selected wavelength depending upon the helical pitch. In the field-OFF state, the liquid crystal directors are configured or randomly oriented so as to scatter incident light.

Abstract:
The invention concerns an optical filter. According to the invention, the optical filter comprises : - a liquid crystal cell (1) filled with a liquid crystal mixture (3) having a Bragg state with a Bragg reflection wavelength within the 380-780 nm range in absence of applied voltage, the liquid crystal cell (1) comprising a plurality of adjacent pixels (41, 42, 43, 44) arranged in a matrix, and a controller (5) connected to the first electrode (111, 112, 113, 114) and to the second electrode (121, 122, 123, 124) of each pixel (41, 42, 43, 44) and configured for selecting a first portion of the plurality of pixels and/or a second portion of the plurality of pixels, and the controller (5) being configured for applying a first voltage (V1) to the first portion of the plurality of pixels so that the liquid crystal mixture in the first portion is in another state, which is an homeotropic state.
