    Abstract: A hydrogen sensing device for determining the concentration of hydrogen in a fluid atmosphere consists of a sealed chamber formed with a window which selectively allows diffusion of hydrogen into the chamber. Alpha particles from a source contained in the chamber ionize the hydrogen and a pair of polarized electrodes collect the resulting electrons to provide a current which is a function of the hydrogen concentration in the chamber. A second window permeable to helium allows escape of the helium from the chamber that is formed by the combination of electrons with alpha particles therein.

    Abstract: IONIZATION DETECTOR An ionization detecting fire alarm device that comprises a double chamber structure, a source disposed in at least one of the chambers and a vernier adjusting screw electrode protruding into one chamber. The chamber containing the adjustable electrode is more open to the atmosphere than the other chamber, porting is provided between chambers and detection occurs by sensing the rate of change of ionization current in the chamber structure. The source of sources, one being in each chamber, is a beta source such as a nickel 63 source. A change in ionization current is detected by a unique circuit of this invention which comprises a programable unijunction transistor oscillator circuit.

    Abstract: In an electronic smoke sensing and alarm device, a dual ionization chamber arrangement comprises a single source of radioactive material and first and second chambers separated by a common electrically conductive electrode. A portion of the radioactive material ionizes the air in the first chamber and another portion of the radioactive material ionizes the air in the second chamber. This arrangement provides an accurate control on the current flow through each chamber. A single source 36 of radioactive material, eg. Americium 241 or Nickel 63, may be disposed on a support 38 which is located on the partition 16 separating the two chambers 28 and 30 so that approximately the same amount of radioactive material is exposed in each chamber. The source and its support may be various shapes. Alternatively, the partition itself may be made up of a radioactive substance.
