Abstract:
Apparatus and method for applying a coating of lubricant on at least a portion of the outer peripheral surface of a can body (6) wherein a turret (16) having a plurality of pockets (18) formed in its outer peripheral surface is mounted for rotation about a relatively fixed axis and during the rotation thereof a can body (6) is fed into each pocket (18). The can body (6) in each pocket (18) is held against a can rotating device (30), the outer peripheral surfaces of a pair of rotating rolls having a space therebetween, by a vacuum acting through the space so that the can body is rotated thereby and while rotating is moved against an arcuate wick (34) having a supply of lubricant so as to form a coating of lubricant on at least a portion of the outer peripheral surface of the can body (6).
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for trimming away a portion of the open end of an untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body and a trimmed away portion using a plurality of can trimming apparatuses (32) which are mounted on a turret (34) which is secured to a main drive shaft (10) for rotation therewith. Each of the can trimming apparatus has mechanisms for cutting (50, 68) the untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body (78) and a trimmed away portion (92); for separating the trimmed can body from the trimmed away portion (76) by moving both in one axial direction and then only the trimmed body in the opposite axial direction; for loading untrimmed can bodies onto each can processing apparatus (76) and for unloading trimmed can bodies therefrom and for cutting, knurling and disposing of the trimmed away portions.
Abstract:
A device and method for flash suppression in a molding with rotation system having a non-rotating mating surface (40) capable of venting gases during the molding process while simultaneously suppressing flash. Flash is directed inwardly and away from the mating surface and contained between a mandrel (26) and mandrel housing (24) in a low pressure reservoir (30) which is completely separate from the mating surface. A cooling fluid is utilized to carry away flash particles from the low pressure reservoir and thereby further prevent contamination of the mating surface.
Abstract:
A butterfly actuator is provided and has a pair of spaced apart cams (84) which move a valve stem (86) wherein the cams are integral with a shaft having one portion having a generally cylindrical outer surface (88) which is rotatably mounted in a bearing sleeve (100) fixedly mounted in a housing mounted at a fixed location and wherein the bearing sleeve has a length which is between about 2.0 and 3.5 times the diameter of the generally cylindrical outer surface. A butterfly actuator (120) is mounted on an end portion of the shaft so that movement of the butterfly actuator rotates the shaft and is formed from a metallic material to provide for an extended life period of useful operation.
Abstract:
A slip pallet (10) constructed of material comprising both once-recycled and multiply-recycled polyethylene terephthalate, and comprising a four-sided sheet having a central portion (12) and at least one edge portion lip (14) which angles laterally upwardly from the central portion (12) along the entire length thereof. Preferably, from about 51 % to about 95 % of the polyethylene terephthalate is multiply-recycled, with the remainder of the polyethylene terephthalate being once-recycled.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the field of self-inflating pouches for use as discharge assistants in dispensers. In the prior art self-inflating pouches, which typically consist of adjacent compartments containing a first reactant in an aqueous solution and a second reactant in either an aqueous solution or solid form, difficulties were encountered in maintaining uniform gas generation in the pouch which resulted in erratic or inconsistent flow from the dispenser. The invention improves the uniformity of gas generation by providing the second reactant uniformly precipitated in a water-dispersible suspension medium. The expandable pouch (2) consists of a plurality of compartments containing a first reactant in an aqueous solution (30), such as a citric acid solution, and a water-dispersible gum suspension (34) containing a precipitated second reactant, such as sodium bicarbonate. The water-dispersible suspension medium (34) may also include a nucleating agent and surfactant.
Abstract:
Can ironing die members for use in a tool pack assembly (14) which is part of a can body making apparatus used in forming cups into can bodies and wherein each can ironing die member (64) is mounted in a fixedly mounted holding means (62) so that the can ironing die member (64) can be moved by the cup from an initial location to a new location if the longitudinal axes of the cup and the ironing die member are not in alignment and retaining apparatus (86) for retaining the can ironing die member at the new location until moved again by an out of alignment cup.
Abstract:
A system for trimming a can body wherein a can body (12, 212) is positioned within a cutting member (26, 226) so that the cutting member (26, 226) is at the location where the can body (12, 212) is to be trimmed. A resilient, deformable object (30, 230) is inserted into the can body (12, 212) and positioned therein so that at least a portion thereof is located radially opposite portions of the can body (12, 212) on each side of the cutting member (26, 226). The resilient, deformable object (30, 230) is deformed so as to move a first part (128, 346) thereof against a portion of the can body to prevent longitudinal movement of the can body and then to move a second part (126, 350) thereof against the portion of the body located between the cutting member (26, 226) and the open end (54, 254) of the can body in a radially outward direction so as to sever that portion from the can body (12, 212).
Abstract:
In fountain roll apparatus, a fountain holder assembly (130) having a fountain block assembly (134) mounted thereon whereby a portion of a rotating metering roll (48) passes through a supply of fluid material (146) contained in a reservoir (144) formed by the fountain block assembly (134) and the portion of the metering roll (48). At least one metering blade member (140) applies a metered amount of fluid material (146) on the metering roll (48) as it passes through the fountain block assembly (134). A doctor blade (154) is mounted on an elongated body (220) having each end rotatably mounted on a lever arm (202, 206) pivoted to the fountain holder assembly (130) and resiliently biased to hold the doctor blade (154) against the outer peripheral surface (126) of the metering roll (48) to remove excess fluid material (146) therefrom. An additional blade (156) is mounted on the elongated body (220) in contact with the outer peripheral surface (126) of the metering roll (48) to ensure that the doctor blade (154) is properly positioned.
