Apparatus is provided for applying lubricating material to each surface of a continuous strip (138) of aluminum wherein a first applicator roll (46) transfers lubricating material from first supply tank (90) to the outer surface of a first coating roll (56) and a second applicator roll (72) transfers lubricating material from a second supply tank (102) to the outer surface of a second coating roll (80) and the continuous strip (138) of aluminum is passed between the first and second coating rolls to have the lubricating material applied to each surface thereof. The second coating roll (80) is rotated by a suitable drive means (140) and is positively connected to the second applicator roll (72), the first coating roll (56) and the first applicator roll (46) so as to rotate these rolls. The apparatus permits differing amounts or kinds of lubricating material to be applied to the surfaces of the continuous strip of aluminum.

A method and apparatus for forming a workpiece blank of a relatively rigid plastic material, such as polyethylene therephthalate into a desired shaped product (322). The apparatus comprises an upper die (302) and a lower die (306) wherein the lower die (306) has first (308) and second (310) moveable parts which function to shear the workpiece blank from a continuous strip (316) of the relatively rigid plastic material and then to cooperate with the upper die (302) to reshape the workpiece blank into the desired shape. The second part (310) is also provided with escape passageways, for excess plastic material, located so as to orient the plastic material and thus increase the strength of the plastic material in the shaped product (322). The product can be a plastic tab used to apply pressure to a portion of a container end member so as to form an opening therein.

A vibrator roll assembly (2) for use in spreading, smoothing and transferring wet ink within a wet ink transfer system of a printing and decorating apparatus wherein a vibrator roll (4) is mounted on a shaft (8) that is supported in a fixed support plate (12) for rotational and reciprocal movement relative thereto. The shaft (8) is rotated by a connecting assembly (16) and a first portion (22) of a reciprocating assembly (20) is attached to the shaft (8) for rotation therewith. A second portion (26) of the reciprocating assembly (20) is mounted on the connecting assembly (16) for rotation relative thereto. The first portion (22) and the second portion (26) of the reciprocating assembly are rotated to have different rotational speeds. Actuating apparatus (30, 32) on the first and second portions are responsive to the difference in the rotational speeds thereof to reciprocate the shaft (8).
Abstract:
An apparatus for controlling the phasing of repeat length portions of a moving web includes an operating station (98) at which the same operation is performed on each repeat length portion of the web passing therethrough. The apparatus includes register indicia means (11) associated with each repeat length portion of the web (20) positioned at a substantially identical location within each repeat length portion (24) of the web for sensing by a register sensing means (120) for indicating the relative position of an associated repeat length portion. Separate detecting means generate a register indicia sensing signal indicating passage of the web, a web travel signal indicative of web travel distance, a machine position reference signal indicative of a cyclically repeating reference position of the operating machine, and a machine movement signal indicative of the relative cyclical machine movement of the operating machine. A data processing unit (100) receives and processes these signals for placing each repeat length portion of the web in proper registry.
Abstract:
A device and method for forming a moving web (16) of laminated composite material having weakened zones therein from a moving continuous web (12) of relatively extensible plastic film material, having identical sets of graphics printed on nominally constant length repeat length portions thereof which are subject to length variation from a constant design repeat length distance, and a moving continuous web (14) of relatively nonextensible paper material. A method and device for forming a three-layered composite material having weakened zones therein is also described. Carton blanks and liquid tight cartons having tear away tab portions formed from such three-layered composite material are also described.
Abstract:
Solution heat pump systems, improvements in the heat exchangers thereof, methods for utilizing waste heat and for improving the efficiency of heat exchange are provided, to up-grade waste heat by temperature boosting. Waste heat is fed to the evaporization zone of a first heat exchanger (2) of an absorption heat pump apparatus to vaporize a first fluid (3) of a binary fluid, the vaporized first fluid (3) is then absorbed by the binary fluid in the absorber zone (5) releasing heat. A second heat exchanger (40) in the absorber zone (5) accepts the released heat from the binary fluid, thereby upgrading the temperature of the fluid to produce steam in the heat exchanger (40). After the release of heat from the binary fluid, the first fluid of the binary fluid is vaporized by use of waste heat and the vapor is condensed (35). The condensate is transferred to the first heat exchanger (2) for revaporation and the desorbed binary fluid is transferred to the absorber for further absorption of fluid. Improved heat exchanging contact between a source of waste heat and a binary working solution is obtained by providing a uniform film of binary working solution on the outside surfaces of a vertical tube heat exchanger.
Abstract:
