    Abstract: A hinge mechanism for use in orthoses and orthopaedic devices has as a hinge body, backplate and two hinge arm carriers or mounts 18,27. … The hinge arm carriers are made of metal and have a bearing hole which fits over one insert. The other end is slotted to accept a hinge arm. The front of the hinge body has four threaded holes 14-17 each bearing a socket screw. An upwards extension 25,26 or 37,38 on each arm carrier provides abutment stops. On each hinge arm, one socket screw limits extension motion and one limits flexion motion. Depending upon how far the socket screws are driven down, the hinge motion may be unrestricted, set for limited arcs of motion or locked in any desired position. Goniometer markings are provided.     Abstract: An orthopaedic hip hinge, has a first horizontal axis which accommodates flexion and extension motion of the hip with optional means for restricting angular travel. A second horizontal axis at right angles to the first, accommodates abductive and adductive motion of the hip and is provided with optional adjustable locking means (39, 40, 41) for setting abduction to a plurality of fixed positions. The mechanism of the second axis is cranked laterally to ensure that during abduction it does not impinge on a cast, orthosis or limb. The hip hinge has upper and lower hinge arms (1, 11), offset during manufacture, to provide good clearance over the hip. The upper hinge arm is fitted with a waistband which is provided with a demountable, adjustable belt and harness. The lower hinge arm is fitted with a headplate which may be removed from and re-assembled to the said hinge arm.

    Abstract: An orthopaedic and orthotic bi-pivotal hinge assembly having a hinge body and a pair of coplanar and independently-pivotal hinge arms. The proximal end portions of the hinge arms are disposed within the hinge body and have planar abutment surfaces that face in the same direction and are disposed immediately adjacent each other when the arms are in full extension. Continuously variable extension control is achieved by an adjuster screw carried by the hinge body that is engageable with both of said planar abutment surfaces of said arms.

    Abstract: A modular bracing system has a relatively small number of elements adapted so that some or all of them may be easily connected to make a variety of braces for the lower limb in the first instance. Lateral and medial calf and thigh shells have central recesses along their entire inner surface with holes at regular pitches. Shells have embossed cut lines across their width to aid accurate fitting. Hip, knee and ankle hinges have arms with corresponding widths, thicknesses and holes so that they may be received intimately into the shell recesses in a variety of positions. By this means, the length of braces and orthoses so formed may be adapted for patients of widely varying height. Wraps made of thin foam covered with pile fabric are embossed with cutting patterns for easy customizing of the braces. Wraps lie under the appropriate shells to render the brace comfortable to wear without inducing relative movement between wearer and brace and the entire unit is secured in place with straps.
