    Abstract: In a smoke detector a regulated, half-wave rectifier supplies power for an exciter lamp, a photocell shielded from the lamp but viewing an area illuminated by the lamp, and a relay switching circuit triggered by the cell for applying the half-wave current to the winding of a horn so as to cause the horn to sound at the half-wave frequency when the cell senses smoke scattered from the illuminated area. The switching circuit for the horn can also be triggered by a thermostatic switch responsive to high ambient temperature. Failure of the exciter lamp or voltage regulator deenergizes the relay, switching in a pulsing circuit which sounds the horn at a distinctively different frequency than the smoke alarm.

    Abstract: 1410283 Photo-electric particle detectors ELECTRO SIGNAL LAB Inc 5 March 1973 [3 March 1972] 10526/73 Heading G1A Apparatus for detecting fluid borne particles, e.g. a smoke detector, includes a dark chamber 6 whose walls are transmissive of fluid borne particles, a plurality of solid state lamps 22, e.g. l.e.d.'s, mounted in an elongate array and electrically connected in series, a first elongate cylindrical lens 30 disposed parallel to the lamp array for projecting a ribbon of light into the chamber, a bar-shaped photo-detector 26 having a single photo-conductive surface of substantially the same length as the array of lamps and mounted parallel to the lamp array, a second cylindrical lens 31 disposed parallel to the photo-detector between the photo-detector and the chamber so as to view the chamber on a ribbon-like path having a substantially linear intersection with the ribbon of light, the photo-detector being responsive to light modulated by particles at the intersection, and means for detecting the response of the photo-detector to the modulated light. As shown the apparatus includes a base 2 of wood or plastics supporting the lamp array and the detector, and a wall 3 e.g. of polyurethane foam. The lamps 22 are arranged in series on a phenolic base 21, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown). The detector 26, Fig.3 (not shown), consists of two electrode areas connected to output terminals 28 and separated by a zig-zag photo-conductive surface. As shown in Fig.6, the diodes 22 are connected to a single constant current source and the output terminals 28 are connected to a circuit 32 for providing an alarm.
