    Abstract: An optical smoke detector comprises split optical block mounting an exciter lamp and a smoke sensing photocell in two passages directed toward an intersection zone in a dark chamber formed by one side of the block, a base with a bottom and side wall and a cover, all secured together by one screw. A light pipe from the lamp extends outside the cover to indicate lamp operation. A second photocell is in a third passage communicating with the lamp passage, the third passage mounting diffuser and pin hole apertured disks for spreading a controlled light intensity over the second photocell. The optical block assembly includes an alarm circuit board operatively connected to the photocells and physically positioning the block on the base.

    Abstract: A simplified smoke or other particle detector circuit includes a light emitting diode in series with a compensating photocell and a photocell sensing LED light scattered from particles. In parallel with the LED is a high resistance, and in parallel with the photocells is a low resistance, the resistances having a common junction coupled to a threshold circuit input as is the output of the photocells. Sensing smoke produces a photocell output which triggers the threshold device to generate an alarm signal. Failure of the LED produces a voltage at the resistance junction which similarly triggers the threshold device to alarm.

    Abstract: In a smoke detector a regulated, half-wave rectifier supplies power for an exciter lamp, a photocell shielded from the lamp but viewing an area illuminated by the lamp, and a relay switching circuit triggered by the cell for applying the half-wave current to the winding of a horn so as to cause the horn to sound at the half-wave frequency when the cell senses smoke scattered from the illuminated area. The switching circuit for the horn can also be triggered by a thermostatic switch responsive to high ambient temperature. Failure of the exciter lamp or voltage regulator deenergizes the relay, switching in a pulsing circuit which sounds the horn at a distinctively different frequency than the smoke alarm.
