Abstract: A novel excitation coil (10 min ) for both starting and maintaining a plasma arc discharge (12) within the envelope of an arc tube (11) in an electrodeless HID lamp (2A), has first and second solenoidally-wound coil portions (10 min -1; 10 min -2), each having an axis substantially in alignment with the axis of the other portion. The coil conductor of each portion may be disposed upon the surface of an imaginary cone having its vertex situated within the arc tube, or beyond the arc tube and within the volume of the other coil portion. The ends of each of the solenoid portions furthest from one another are connected (10 min -3) together. The remaining coil ends (10 min -a; 10 min -d), closely-positioned on opposite sides of the volume occupied by the arc tube (11) in the assembled lamp, provide a sufficiently high starting potential, responsive to receiving an excitation signal, for providing a magnetic field in the volume occupied by the arc tube; at any instant the magnetic fields of the two portions combine in-phase in the volume between the closer ends of both portions.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the operation of a switched reluctance motor at low speed incorporates an advance angle regulator which regulates the firing angle of current pulses to the switched reluctance motor so that over a wide range of speeds and levels for direct current source voltages, the winding current reaches a commanded set point at a commanded angle. The advance angle regulator may comprise a closed loop regulator which includes apparatus for detecting the actual angular position at which motor current reaches a commanded level and adjusts the turn-on angle to shift the angle at which current reaches its desired level to a desired angle. The regulator incorporates a feedforward portion and an integral portion. The feedforward portion is utilized primarily to accommodate situations in which there is no current feedback. The integral portion provides the primary regulation when current is regulated to its desired value. The regulator causes the torque versus current command to have a transfer function which does not depend upon speed or DC source voltage over a wide range of speed, voltage and torque.

Abstract: A conductor bar (62) in a dynamoelectric machine includes a coolant channel (74) having a depressed portion (76) passing under a gusset (70) reinforcing a joint (66) with an end turn (64). The end turn also includes a coolant channel (78) with a depressed portion (80) under the gusset and meeting the depressed portion in the conductor bar. The gusset includes a groove (86) therein, generally congruent with the two depressed portions passing thereunder. Bevelled entry and exit portions (88,90) may be provided on the underside of the gusset to reduce flow turbulence of coolant entering and exiting the flow channel defined between the gusset and the two depressed portions. In a further embodiment of the invention, a diagonal portion joining the two depressed portions, matched with a congruent shape in the gusset, both reduces flow resistance and increases an area available for brazing the gusset in place.

Abstract: A cable handling system for routing a group of cables (28, 35, 36) to a rotatable hub (20) comprises an arm (22) and a sleeve (38) which divides the group of cables into side-by-side subgroups. The sleeve (38) is flexible and allows the cables to slide and flex within it. Straps (46,47,52,53) attach the sleeve to a forward position on the arm and a fixed rearward position to hold the sleeve longitudinally in place and subject it to longitudinal and transverse tension. A cable rotator (85) holds the cables next to the hub (20) where they enter the hub area and allows them to pivot in the plane of rotation but does not allow longitudinal sliding of the cables. In the arm area, rigid longitudinal partitions (108) maintain the subgrouping of the cables which are enclosed between top (30, 33) and bottom (34) channel members to longitudinally support the cables against buckling but facilitate sliding among the cables.
