Abstract:
A consumable applicator comprising one or more conduits in a fluid communication with a liquid composition dispensing system wherein the liquid composition comprises friction control components. The consumable applicator comprises a solid body having hardness of less than or equal 150 HB, a housing and a biasing member within said housing for advancing the consumable applicator toward a dispensing end. The consumable applicator may be used for applying a friction control consumable to sliding metallic parts such as the railway rails or wheels.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a modified interlocking solid composition stick for applying to steel surfaces that are in sliding or rolling-sliding contact. The modified stick comprises a body member with four sides, a first end and an opposed second end, and a nib member attached to the first end of the body member, the nib member having four sides connected by substantially curved side edges. The second end of the body member contains a cavity with substantially curved side walls dimensioned to snugly receive a nib member of a corresponding interlocking solid stick. To reduce the likelihood of failure of the nib or cavity, the dimensions of the nib are optimized such that a length of one side of the nib member (nl) and a length of the side of the body member (l) in the same plane has a ratio nl/l from about 0.6 to about 0.75.
Abstract:
According to the invention there is provided a method of reducing wear of one or both of two steel elements having surfaces in sliding or sliding-rolling contact. The method involves applying an HPF friction control composition to one, or more than one contacting surface of one or both of the two steel elements. In a particular example, the HPF friction control composition comprises a rheological control agent, a lubricant, a friction modifier, and one, or more than one of a retentivity agent, an antioxidant, a consistency modifier, and a freezing point depressant.
Abstract:
A spray nozzle comprising a nozzle body (110) having an air channel in fluid communication with an air supply, and directing air to one or more air openings (160) at an end of the nozzle body, and a liquid channel in fluid communication with a liquid supply and directing a liquid to a liquid outlet (150) of the nozzle body. An air cap (120) is disposed at the end of the nozzle body and has an orifice in fluid communication with the one or more than one air openings, the orifice is disposed about the outside of the liquid outlet. The spray nozzle also comprises an extension (170) placed on the liquid outlet, outlet protrudes beyond the surface of the air cap. The spray nozzle is well suited for use under windy conditions in that fouling of the nozzle is reduced or eliminated.
Abstract:
A solid stick composition for use on steel surfaces that are in sliding or rolling-sliding contact. The solid stick composition comprises a vinyl ester resin, for example, from about 20 to about 80 weight percent vinyl ester resin, a solid lubricant, for example from about 0 to about 80 weight percent lubricant, and optionally a friction modifier, for example from about 0 to about 40% weight percent friction modifier, or a combination of a solid lubricant and a friction modifier. The solid stick comprises at least one of the lubricant or the friction modifier. A method of controlling friction between a metal surface and a second metal surface by applying the solid stick composition to one or more than one of the metal surfaces is also disclosed as well as a method of reducing lateral force in a rail system comprising applying the solid stick composition onto a wheel or rail surface.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a modified solid stick composition comprising a thermosetting plasticizer, a resin, a lubricant, a friction modifier, or a combination thereof. The solid stick compositions may be used for application between two metal surfaces in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems. A method of reducing energy consumption, or controlling friction between a metal surface and a second metal surface by applying the solid stick composition to one or more than one of the metal surfaces, is also provided.
Abstract:
A method for applying a liquid composition to a rail surface is provided. This method involves supplying a liquid composition in one or more reservoirs on a rail car (revenue generating car), and applying the liquid composition from the one or more reservoirs to the rail surface. A liquid composition application system is also provided. The liquid composition application system includes a reservoir(s) for holding a liquid composition mounted on a rail car. A pipe is connected to the reservoir(s), and a pump, for moving the liquid composition from the reservoir(s) to a dispensing nozzle(s), is provided. A controller processes topological information, data from the liquid composition application system, or both. The application of the liquid composition may be monitored and controlled from a remote site separate from the rail car.
Abstract:
According to the invention there is provided a liquid friction control composition characterized as either having a high and positive friction characteristic or a low and neutral friction characteristic, comprising a retentivity agent. The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a solid lubricant, a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to novel lubricant and friction modifier compositions optionally comprising a solid lubricant and a binding agent in water medium suitable for lubricating steel-steel interfaces such as tractor-trailer couplings, rail-wheel systems and other heavy duty applications. The invention also relates to compositions described above which include friction modifiers with high or very high and positive coefficients of friction such that the coefficient of friction is considerably higher than the solid lubricant. The invention further relates to compositions comprising a binding agent and a friction modifier with a very high and positive coefficient of friction in a water medium.
