According to the present invention, there is provided a rotary furnace 10 comprising a rotatably mounted tumbler heating drum 12, preferably disposed substantially horizontally. The rotatable drum 12 is for holding a load 4 to be heated, such as non-ferrous metal for recycling or granular material such as chalk or cement for calcinations. A burner assembly 2 is provided in the region of one end of the rotatable drum 12, for supplying a burner flame 24 into the drum for use in heating the load 4. The burner optionally includes an oxidant lance 18 and is characterized in that means 26, 28 are provided for varying the aim and/or opening of the burner flame 24 and/or of an oxidant jet 22 if the furnace is equipped with an oxidant lance 18.
