    Abstract: 4940. Nathan, Sir F. L., Rintoul, W., and Baker, F. Feb. 26. Explosives. - Relates to gelatinized nitrocellulose-nitroglycerine propellant ' explosives, and consists in making such explosives with both a non-volatile gelatinizer and a stabilizer. The stabilizer may belong to any of the groups of substances set out in Specifications 12,742/12, 12,743/12, 12,745/12, and 12,746/12, or other suitable substances, for example ethyl- and methyl-#-naphthyl ether, phenyl-benzyl ether, and phenanthrene. The gelatinizer may also be any of a large number of substances, for instance amylphthalate ethylphthalate, mono-, di-, and tri-acetin, and nitroderivatives of hydrocarbons such as di- or tri-nitrotoluene. One example contains 40 per cent of nitroglycerine, 50 per cent of nitrocellulose (completely soluble in ether alcohol), 7À5 per cent of ethyl phthalate, and 2À5 per cent of phenyl benzyl ether. Specification 14,231/01 is referred to.

    Abstract: 12,746. Nathan, Sir F. L., Rintoul, W., and Baker, F. May 30. Explosives.-Relates to gelatinized propellent explosives containing nitrocompounds such as nitrocellulose, nitromannite, nitrostarch, and nitroglycerine, and consists in rendering them more stable by the addition thereto of one or more anilides. The anilides used are organic amides of the formula R.CO.NH2 in which one of the hydrogen atoms of the NH2 group is replaced by an aromatic radicle and in which the second hydrogen atom may be replaced by an aromatic or aliphatic radicle. In an example, the explosive contains 30 per cent of nitroglycerine, 65 per cent of guncotton, and 5 per cent of phenylacetanilide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 17,456/88,

    Abstract: 25,993. Robertson, R., and Rintoul, W. Dec. 19. Liquids, treating with gases.-A tower for treating gases with liquids, and suitable for scrubbing gases, is formed with an inlet c, covered with a hood m, for the gas, an outlet f for the liquid, an outlet c for the washed or treated gas, and an inlet tube for delivering liquid to the supply pipes d , d , d , d'. The tower may be separated by vertical partitions into compartments. The tubes d , d , d , d , supply the liquid to troughs h having side lips, beneath which are lower troughs i. Passing between the troughs h and i are strands or threads of some material, such as wool, cotton, asbestos, or glass, which is not attacked by either the liquid or gas. The strands are arranged parallel with and close to one another, and may hang vertically downwards on each side, but preferably pass backwards and forwards round horizontal rods or bars k, interlacing as shown. The bars k and the troughs are carried by vertical plates at the ends of each section, each set forming a framework which may be lifted out bodily for convenience in cleaning &c.
