Abstract: 4941. Nathan, Sir F. L., Rintoul, W., and Baker, F. Feb. 26. Explosives. - Relates to nitroglycerine-nitrocellulose explosives, and consists in gelatinizing them by means of such substances claimed as stabilizers in Specifications 12,742/12, 12,743/12, 12,745/12, and 12,746/12 as are also gelatinizers. When the substance used is relatively a weak stabilizer, there is added to it another that is a relatively strong stabilizer and weak gelatinizers. Phenyl urethane, ethyl phenyl urea, formanilide, phenyl ether of diethyl carbaminic acid, and a large number of others are mentioned as examples. The constituents are mixed by the method described in Specification 10,376/89.

Abstract: 12,742. Nathan, Sir F. L., Rintoul, W., and Baker, F. May 30. [Cognate Application, 12,744/12.] Explosives.-Relates to explosives containing nitrocellulose, nitromannite, nitrostarch, or nitroglycerine, and consists in the addition thereto of substances such as simple or mixed esters containing at least one aromatic radicle capable of ready nitration by the products of decomposition of the nitro-explosives, having no deleterious action on the explosive, and capable of being homogeneously retained in the explosive in sufficient quantity for effective stabilisation. Diphenyl-ether, phenyl-benzylether, ethyl-naphthyl-ether, and phenantrylmethyl-ether are specially mentioned. In an example, the explosive contains 30 per cent of nitroglycerine, 65 per cent of guncotton, and 5 per cent of ethyl-#-naphthyl-ether.

Abstract: 3020. Nathan, F. L., Thomson, J. M., and Rintoul, W. Feb. 9. Nitro-glycerin.-Relates to the manufacture of nitro-glycerin, and consists in adding water to the waste acids after the separation of the nitro-glycerin, so as to dispense with the process of "after separation." The apparatus described in Specification No. 15,983, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Ammunition &c.], may be used for the process, the separation of the nitro-glycerin being started at such an initial temperature, that the final temperature, after the addition of all the displacing acid, shall not be lower than 15‹ C. On the completion of the separation, the liquid is air-stirred, and, if the nitrating- acids contain 5 per cent. of water, then water, equal in weight to 2 per cent. of the waste acids formed, is added, but if the nitrating-acids contain less than 4 per cent. of water, or if the temperature be lower than 15‹ C., from 3 to 5 per cent. of water is required. During the addition of water, the contents are air-stirred but not cooled, a further quantity of displacing-acid being admitted after the agitation has been stopped. The operation can be carried out with the plant ordinarily used, as well as with that described in the prior Specification.

Abstract: 25,994. Robertson, R., and Rintoul, W. Dec. 19. Drawings !o Specification. Coated fabrics.-Relates to the recovery of acetone used as a solvent in the manufacture of articles or materials in which a dissolved nitrocellulose or its equivalent is employed. The air containing the acetone vapour is brought into contact, preferably by the process described in Specification No. 25,993, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Acids, alkalies, &c.], with solutions of bisulphites, such as sodium and potassium bisulphite, the acetone being thereby absorbed. The bisulphite compound is then distilled to separate the acetone. The bisulphite solution is cooled before distillation, to enable the greater part of the sulphate contained in it to crystallize and be removed, the complete rectification being effected by the addition of an alkali before or after distillation.
