The present invention relates to a method and device for growing biomass on sludge, comprising the steps of: -providing aquatic worms in a reactor, -providing a sludge for growing aquatic worm biomass, -supplying the reactor, comprising the aquatic worms, with the sludge to allow aquatic worm biomass to grow, and, -obtaining compounds selected from the group consisting of proteins, lipids, fatty acids, and amino acids from the aquatic worm biomass.

The invention relates to an electrode, and a sensor- system for capacitively and/or photovoltaic sensing contaminants in a fluid. The invention also relates to a micro-reactor comprising such sensor- system and methods for measuring and producing. The capacitance electrode comprises: - a transducing element (6),- an affinity layer (10) that in use is in contact with a fluid to be measured, wherein the affinity layer comprises a multi-array surface; and - an organic Monolayer insulating layer (8) separating the transducing element and the affinity layer, wherein the electrode is arranged such that in use contaminants in the fluid may interact with the affinity layer.

The present invention relates to a device and method for purifying a liquid. The device comprises: - a container for the liquid for purifying; and - treatment means for selectively applying an electric and/or electromagnetic field in the container, wherein the electric and/or electromagnetic field is such that a gas discharge occurs in gas bubbles present in the liquid, wherein radicals are created which have a purifying effect on the liquid and/or decompose organic components in the liquid.

According to a first aspect, the present invention relates to a method for obtaining a cathodophilic, hydrogen-producing microbial culture. According to further aspects, the invention relates to the cathodophilic, hydrogen-producing microbial culture and the use of this microbial culture for the production of hydrogen. Further aspects of the invention relate to a method for manufacturing a bifunctional bioelectrode in which the cathodophilic, hydrogen-producing microbial culture is applied, and the bifunctional bioelectrode obtained with this method. Other aspects of the invention relate to a device for producing hydrogen in which the electrochemically active, hydrogen-producing microbial culture is applied.

The present invention relates to a method for extracting metal and/or metalloid ions from an aqueous medium, comprising the steps of: a) mixing the aqueous medium with an ionic liquid comprising an aliphatic carboxylate anion having at least one unsaturated carbon-carbon bond, or and/or with a cation comprising at least two amino acids; b) transferring the metal and/or metalloid ions from the aqueous medium to the ionic liquid; c) separating the ionic liquid and the aqueous medium; and d) obtaining the metal and/or metalloid ions from the ionic liquid by at least one method selected from electrochemically reducing the metal and/or metalloid ions, crystallization, and precipitation. The method for comprises: -providing an anode compartment comprising an anode; -providing a cathode compartment comprising a cathode, -wherein the compartments are separated by at least one ion exchange membrane; -providing the ammonium comprising fluid in the anode compartment and a second fluid in the cathode compartment; -applying a voltage between the anode and the cathode; and -extracting nitrogen from the cathode compartment.
