Abstract:
System and method for parallel selection and retrieval of data stored in an optical data storage medium. A holographic data storage medium has a plurality of data sites, each data site containing a plurality of data units recorded as multiplexed holograms. A plurality of light beams are independently controlled to illuminate a different one of the plurality of data sites for selecting and retrieving any one data unit stored at each of the plurality of data sites. The invention enables the simultaneous selection and retrieval of data units stored at a plurality of data sites of the holographic data storage medium, and permits an increase in optical data transfer rate.
Abstract:
Magnetic tape onto which information may be recorded on either side exhibits the risk of having information recorded on one side affect the opposite side when the two sides are adjacent, such as when the tape is wound in a tape pack. The chance that information recorded onto one surface of a double sided magnetic tape will affect information recorded on the other surface of the magnetic tape is reduced by keeping fields emanating from a recorded region less than about one-half the coercivity of the magnetic medium onto which the information is recorded.
Abstract:
A system, method, and product are disclosed for associating subcomponents with a storage library. A unique identifier is stored in a particular storage library. Each subcomponent that is a part of the particular storage libary is then associated with the particular storage library by storing a copy of the unique identifier within each subcomponent. In order for a subcomponent to be usable by a particular storage library, the particular storage library's unique identifier must be stored within the subcomponent.
Abstract:
A server includes a dedicated hardware card that is responsible for digesting an incoming email, appending a date and time to the digest to create a time stamp, and signing the result with a private digital signature. This provides a secure time stamp for an email that is resistant to falsification and tampering by the sender of an email, and which can be verified by a receipient of the email.
Abstract:
A method for scaling a media storage library is provided, wherein the library comprises a plurality of media storage cells and at least one media picker robot. The method comprises connecting a new physical component to a section of the library. Examples of new components include additional robots, storage cell arrays, media players, as well as connecting a second adjacent library by means of a pass-through mechanism. Control software integrates this new physical component into the function of the library by auditing the content and function of the new component. During the connection and functional integration of the new component, the rest of the library continues its current operations. The method may further comprise defining at least one work zone within the library, wherein robots do not enter the work zone but continue to operate in other areas of the library.
Abstract:
A system according to the invention for mounting multiple media drives includes a housing and multiple modules that are insertable into and removable from the housing. Each module is adapted to hold a media drive. Furthermore, the system includes a resilient layer disposed between the housing and the modules when the modules are inserted into the housing for attenuating shocks and vibrations. The resilient layer includes a slot for inhibiting transmission of shocks and vibrations between at least two of the modules.
Abstract:
A system and method for exchanging tape cartridges between two automated tape cartridge libraries (104, 105). A carriage assembly (100) carries cartridges back and forth between the libraries. The carriage assembly includes a cartridge transport cell (106), has a vertical axis, and cooperates with pass through ports in the libraries for providing access to tape cartridge storage cells in the libraries. A guide structure extends between the libraries for supporting the carriage assembly. The guide structure defines a linear path and has first and second sides substantially parallel to the linear path which define an envelope. The carriage assembly is driven along the guide structure, and automatically rotates about the substantially vertical axis. The cartridge transport cell is accessible by robotic devices in the libraries when the carriage assembly is aligned with the pass through ports. The carriage assembly rotates substantially within the envelope as it is driven along the guide structure.
Abstract:
A system is provided to support dynamically changeable virtual mapping schemes in a data processing system. The present invention separates processing of data unit requirements from the selection of which storage subsystems to use for storage by using a storage methodologies inventory. A stored data management subsystem contains one or more hosts. A plurality of data storage elements is functionally coupled to the one or more hosts. The plurality of data storage elements is organized using a plurality of layers of mapping tables. The plurality of layers of mapping tables provides unique identification of location of the data such that individual data entries in a mapping table is variable and self-defining with respect to the amount of data managed. In addition, the present system provides various instant copy mechanisms for copying data upon receiving a write operation to either a source or copy data. The instant copy mechanisms may be selected based on the type of mapping originally used to store the data that is to be copied.
Abstract:
A data storage system for storing data for a host processor includes physical data storage devices each having data storage attributes and an outboard storage manager. The outboard storage manager is operable with the physical data storage devices for presenting to the host processor a virtual data storage image having a desired data storage attribute for a particular data storage application by organizing the physical data storage devices in an arranagement suitable for providing the desired data storage attribute irrespective of the data storage attributes of the physical data storage devices such that the combined physical data storage device arrangement emulates the virtual data storage image. The outboard storage manager is operable to transfer data between the host processor and the organized physical data storage device arrangement via the virtual data storage image.
