Abstract: 117,863. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Oct. 11, 1917. Rolling.-The bearing chocks and brasses of two-high rolling-mills fitted with the usual hydraulic balance gear, are arranged to facilitate the removal and insertion of the rolls in their housings. A series of slings of wire rope &c. E, G, G , H are provided, which can be passed round the pintle on the coupling-piece of the rolls C, C' and round shackles E on the housing D. To get at the top brass of the top chock, the top roll C is lowered by the balance-gear A to its lowest position, the bottom half C of the chock is disconnected from the balance-gear and the top half C connected to the balance-gear is raised clear and secured by links J, J anchored to the housing D. To reach the bottom half C of the same chock, the top roll C is raised by the balance-gear and the slings E, G placed round its pintle and coupling-piece and round the shackles E , the lower half C being then lowered clear of the suspended roll. To obtain access to the bottom roll chock K, the upper roll is lowered till slings G , H can be passed round the pintles of both rolls, which are then raised together, leaving the bottom chock K exposed. Hooked links K , K connect the upper chock C to the chock K for raising the latter, when required. The rolls may in like manner be transferred bodily to bogies run lengthways beneath them.

Billet-piercing; stamping.-In a machine for making shell casings, cartridges, &c., a piercing- pot 11 and a drawing-die support 12 are arranged on a reciprocating slide 13, which brings them in turn below a mandrel carried by a press, so that, after piercing, a billet can be raised by its mandrel and then be forced through the drawing-die. Below the die-holder 14, four spring-pressed jaws 16 are arranged to leave a conical opening 24 in line with the die axis. The jaws are forced apart by the billet as it passes through the die, and then close behind it so as to strip it from the mandrel as this returns. The jaws are lubricated through passages 30.

Forging. - In a forging-press working at high speed, the work is automatically rotated or kept at rest while a motor supplying the power is running continuously. One of the two gears for transmitting the rotation may be thrown out of operation. The motor 19, Fig. 2, drives by worm gearing 17, 16 and and claw clutches a pair of spurwheels 14 gearing with wheels 13, the whole forming one turning-gear. The wheels 13, Fig. 4, have wearing-rings 36 against which bear semicircular shoes 35. Spring-pressed wedges 39 tend to separate the shoes and thereby to maintain a friction-drive to hubs 33, on which is mounted a sprocket-wheel 11 for a chain 10. The clutches are thrown into or out of operation by means of a solenoid and linkage 27, 25, and when one of the turning-gears is to be used alone the clutches of the other are thrown out of operation, and the power transmitted to the chain 10 is then correspondingly altered.

Rope or chain stress indicators and stress-limiting devices.-In a device for preventing injury to a crane in consequence of the full stress of an excessive load being thrown upon the hoisting-rope, the ail portion of the winding-rope or its equivalent A is attached to a flexible band B, which is led over friction drums E, Candconnected to a counterweight D bearing a predetermined ratio to the maximum working load, The drum E is adjustably mounted to regulate the arc of contact of the drum C and band B. The weight D slides on rods d and normally rests on springs J, which serve to cushion the weight should it fall from its elevated position. An excess load causes the band to slide over the drums, which are prevented from rotation iu that direction by ratchets and pawls, and the weight is raised. The weight may be caused to ring a bell M. When the tension decreases, the drums slide over the pawls and the weight falls back on to the springs. The tail end of the rope may pass directly over the drums. Overwinding of the weight H is prevented by its encountering some portion of the crane structure.

The entablature A and base-plate B are, as usual, built of three parts A , A , A . The portions A, which encircle the columns G, are formed with extensions C which interlock with corresponding parts C' on the flange of the girder section A , the security of the interlocking being ensured by folding keys d. The surfaces of the sections A', A , A , which lie parallel to the direction of the working load, are drawn together by bolts e, and keys or cotters F are driven in recesses in these surfaces. By this construction, the bolts e are relieved of all stresses due to the working of the press.

The valve H, Fig. 2, controlling the exhaust from the hydraulic cylinder is operated by means including a pedal J, lever K', and spring-controlled tappet K2.
