Abstract: 118,518. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Nov. 16, 1917. Shearing.-An hydraulically-operated shearing- press or the like of the kind in which the work is carried by a rising and falling table is constructed so that the table is lowered, not by the pressure on the work, but by a mechanical connexion with a moving member of the press. A lost-motion device forms part of this connexion to enable the shearing-blade to be moved relatively to the work. A clutch is also provided between this mechanical connexion and the table-lowering gear, this clutch being controlled by a ram operated by a cylinder in communication with the main ram of the press. As shown, the work-table B is supported by adjustable arms A of a parallel-motion link system comprising lever arms A , A connected by links A' all controlled from a shaft A, which is connected by a link C to a counterbalancing hydraulic ram C in a cylinder C . The shaft A is rocked to lower the table B by means of a link D connected to the moving head D of the press and operating a lever D on a counterbalanced shaft D by means of a slot D , and a pin on the lever D . The shaft D transmits motion by means of a link D and a freely-mounted clutch element D , Fig. 2, to the shaft A, the movable element D of the clutch being operated to close the clutch by a lever E operated by a ram E of a cylinder E supplied from the main intensifier supply to the press through a pipe E and non- return valve E . When it is required to hold the table in its lowered position for a certain time, the pressure is maintained in the cylinder E until the main hand-lever of the machine reaches a predetermined position, whereupon it is caused to operate by means of a link G , lever G , and link G , a valve G which connects the cylinder E to exhaust, the clutch D', D being then unclutched and a valve H opened by means of a link and lever system H , H with a lost motion. The valve H admits water from the accumulator to the cylinder C and thereby raises the table to normal position.

A hydraulic cylinder L and piston K applies pressure to the nearest bearing B to the upper roll, which is driven by a jointed shaft M. The shaft P of the lower roll is driven direct.

Rolling.-The bearing chocks and brasses of two-high rolling-mills fitted with the usual hydraulic balance gear, are arranged to facilitate the removal and insertion of the rolls in their housings. A series of slings of wire rope &c. E, G, G , H are provided, which can be passed round the pintle on the coupling-piece of the rolls C, C' and round shackles E on the housing D. To get at the top brass of the top chock, the top roll C is lowered by the balance-gear A to its lowest position, the bottom half C of the chock is disconnected from the balance-gear and the top half C connected to the balance-gear is raised clear and secured by links J, J anchored to the housing D. To reach the bottom half C of the same chock, the top roll C is raised by the balance-gear and the slings E, G placed round its pintle and coupling-piece and round the shackles E , the lower half C being then lowered clear of the suspended roll. To obtain access to the bottom roll chock K, the upper roll is lowered till slings G , H can be passed round the pintles of both rolls, which are then raised together, leaving the bottom chock K exposed. Hooked links K , K connect the upper chock C to the chock K for raising the latter, when required. The rolls may in like manner be transferred bodily to bogies run lengthways beneath them.

Abstract: 28,859. Duncan Stewart & Co. and Lyon, H. Dec. 7. Motors, controlling.- Liquid resistances with dipping cones, such as are described in Specification No. 5474, A.D. 1890, are used in pairs, with supporting cords and pulleys, for supplying either of two motor circuits or, as illustrated, for controlling motors for cranes and other purposes. In this arrangement, four earthenware or other jars contain resistant liquid and four hollow metal cones B', B', all connected to one supply conductor C. The lower parts of the jars may be connected together by pipes, with valves and a gauge glass. Four other cones C are hung from a pulley N, one pair at each side, and are connected electrically by flexible conductors Q. Two of these, on opposite sides, and optionally with smaller jars, are connected through the terminal P to one end of the shunt field circuit of the motor, which is thus gradually supplied with current in one direction when the pulley N is turned in either direction. The other two upper cones are connected by terminals P', P to the motor armature. Switches Q , Q , operated by a roller R on the pulley N, connect either terminal P , P , the cone of which is raised, with a plate Q connected to the second supply conductor. The armature is thus supplied with a regulated current in either direction, depend. ing on the direction and extent of turning of the pulley N.
