    Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting false contour noise are provided to detect the false contour quantitatively by expressing the false contour exponentially using luminance change values of a plurality of pixels. CONSTITUTION: The false contour detecting apparatus comprises a camera, a luminance operation unit, a false contour detection unit, and a camera control part. The camera moves by the per second decided pixel. The shutter is opened for a predetermined time to photograph the image of the display(100). The luminance operation unit detects the luminance of a plurality of pixels using the image measured by the camera. The absolute value of the luminance variation is calculated by the luminance variation between the adjacent pixels. The false contour detection unit calculates the first luminance difference values between the absolute value of luminance change of n pixel and the absolute value of luminance change of n-1 pixel, if the absolute value of luminance change of n pixel is higher than a standard luminance value. The second luminance difference values of the adjacent to the luminance variation absolute value and n pixel of the n luminance variation between absolute value of the n+1 pixel are calculated. The false contour exponent is calculated corresponding to the mean value of the first luminance difference value and the second luminance difference value. The camera control part controls the transition speed of a camera, and controls the time when the shutter of a camera is closed or opened.
